BI Technologies Develops Power Transformers for Power-Over-Ethernet Applications

ANAHEIM, CA (February 26, 2007) - Providing design engineers with a series of DC/DC converter transformers specifically designed for Power-over-Ethernet applications, TT electronics BI Technologies Magnetic Components Division has developed a family of surface mount packages for a wide variety of output voltages. Designated the HM110 Series, the RoHS-compliant transformers feature flyback topology and are available in power ratings from 5W to 15W for the three PoE power ratings.

According to David Smolik, director of product development for BI Technologies Magnetic Components Division, the surface mount transformers were designed specifically for Power-over-Ethernet applications. "The transformers are specified at the powered device and work to step down the voltage to the IC level," said Smolik. "As the demand for powered devices continues to rise, so does the need for these surface mount transformers. These devices are ideal for meeting the needs of security cameras, wireless access points and other PoE applications."

The HM110 Series PoE transformers are available in power ratings of 5W, 6W, 8W, and 15W, with inductance values from 180µH to 70µH. DC resistance ranges from 2.5mΩ to 75.0mΩ. Isolation is 1500Vrms, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. BI Technologies will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.

The transformers feature the following measurements: 5W-15.0mm x 22.5mm x 8.5mm; 6W-16.0mm x 14.0mm x 7.5mm; 8W-17.5mm x 22.5mm x 10mm; 15W-13.5mm x 17.8mm x 12.5mm. The transformers are available in 13-inch diameter embossed tape and reel packages.
Typical pricing for the HM110 Series PoE transformer is approximately $0.65 to $1.05 depending on volume, with lead times from stock to 10 weeks.
