New TOPASBLEND(TM) Grades Raise Performance Level of Polyolefins

Novel COC/Polyolefin Blends Deliver Higher HDT Than Standard Olefins

FRANKFURT, Germany, - TOPAS Advanced Polymers has unveiled a new family of TOPAS® cyclic olefin copolymer/polyolefin blends which deliver thermal performance well beyond that of typical polyolefins. TOPASBLEND(TM) compounds, which represent the company's first offering in COC/polyolefin blends, provide a heat deflection temperature (HDT) as high as 160°C (320°F).

These new COC/polyolefin blends provide exceptional high-temperature performance and greater e-modulus without the use of fillers or reinforcing materials which can adversely affect other material properties. The new product range consists of three grades with an HDT of 140°C, 150°C, and 160°C, respectively. The three materials - TOPASBLEND 14-001, 15-001, and 16-001 - contain varying COC ratios. Key market areas include medical, electrical/electronics, and high-performance films.

"These new blends provide the performance of engineering resins while retaining all of the benefits of polyolefins," said Wilfried Hatke, European sales and marketing manager, TOPAS Advanced Polymers. "Their enhanced capabilities make them suitable for a range of new and demanding applications."

TOPASBLEND compounds can be processed by standard methods including injection molding and extrusion. Compared to standard polyolefins, they boast improved thermoformability, greater stiffness, high creep resistance, reduced warpage, and lower water transmission. The blends withstand repeated steam sterilization (up to 200 cycles) at 121°C or 134°C and are suitable for medical devices.

The new materials provide low dielectric properties and are targeted for E/E applications as a replacement for fluoropolymers.

The new grades are commercially available in Europe and will be offered in other regions later. TOPAS Advanced Polymers plans to explore new opportunities for these unique COC/polyolefin blends, offering an expanded slate of custom grades that meet specific customer requirements.
