Makita Raises the Bar Again with Second-Generation 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Driver-Drill

New compact cordless driver-drill is successor to the category-leader BDF452HW

- La Mirada, Calif. - Makita, a worldwide manufacturer of technologically advanced power tools that are more compact with less weight yet deliver industrial strength power and results, has released the new 18V Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless ½" Driver-Drill, model LXFD01CW. The new LXFD01CW, the latest release in Makita's 18V Compact Lithium-Ion platform created by Makita in 2006, delivers more power with less weight and improved ergonomics for a range of drilling, driving and fastening tasks.

"Four years ago Makita created the 18V Compact Lithium-Ion category with model BDF452HW, and Makita has been dominating the 18V Lithium-Ion market ever since," said Ethan Haughawout, Makita product manager, cordless products. "When the BDF452HW first arrived, it sent shockwaves though the power tool market because no one had ever felt a tool that was so comfortable and lightweight, but with plenty of power for professional applications. It was groundbreaking technology, and the competition has been playing catch-up ever since."

"The new LXFD01CW," continued Haughawout, "takes compact 18V Lithium-Ion power to an even higher level with more power, improved ergonomics, less weight, and the fastest charge-time on the market at only 15 minutes. Just as it was in 2006, there's nothing like it on the market right now."

Improved Power-to-Weight Ratio
The LXFD01CW is powered by a Makita-built 2-piece 4-pole motor with bigger and stronger front end ball bearings, and heavy gauge copper winding on the armature. The advanced engineering delivers 480 in.lbs. of Max Torque and 290 in.lbs. of PTI Torque for 30 in.lbs. more power than the BDF452HW. The new planetary gear system and transmission has been redesigned for increased durability in a more compact size, so the LXFD01CW is 7/16" smaller and weighs only 3.3 lbs.

The LXFD01CW has 16 clutch settings and an all-metal 2-speed transmission (0-400/0-1,500 RPM) to cover a wide range of drilling and driving applications. The improved ergonomic design with a new rubberized soft grip delivers increased comfort on the job, and the built-in L.E.D. light illuminates the job area for applications in dark spaces and close quarters.

"Pro tradesman on commercial jobsites across the country use 18V tools all day, everyday," said Haughawout. "They are constantly demanding more power and less weight from 18V tools, and Makita delivers again by taking the market-leading half-inch compact driver-drill and making it even better."

Makita 18V Lithium-Ion
The LXFD01CW is Makita's latest release in the 18V Compact Lithium-Ion platform, with more solutions on the way. Makita, the innovator in cordless with the industry's first 18V Lithium-Ion line-up in 2005 and the first 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in 2006, has engineered the new LXFD01CW to accept both the Makita 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery and the full size 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery. Similar to the rest of Makita's groundbreaking battery technology, the 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery charges on Makita's ENERGY STAR qualified Rapid Optimum Charger for maximum efficiency. The compact battery will reach a full charge in only 15 minutes for more work and less downtime.

"This powerful, fastest-charging half-inch driver-drill combines the industry's best-in-class Lithium-Ion battery technology with a lightweight, compact design," said Haughawout. "Once again, Makita takes the leadership position in 18V Lithium-Ion, and we will continue to drive the category with more new products in 2011."

Engineered for a Range of Applications
The LXFD01CW 18V Compact Lithium-Ion ½" Driver-Drill is engineered for a wide range of drilling and driving applications, and is ideal for electricians, plumbers, mobile installers, HVAC. woodworking, fencing and decking, MRO, remodelers, service and repair, and general contractors who require a best-in-class engineered compact cordless driver-drill. About Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
Since its introduction on October 3, 2005, Makita's LXT Series featuring 18V Lithium-Ion Battery Technology has been providing the professional end-user with more work solutions. Nearly five years later, with over 35 trade solutions in the LXT Series, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery is a breakthrough in cordless with more power, less weight and better engineering, and Makita is proud to be the first to bring it to jobsites across America.

"Makita did not just design a longer run time battery; we designed a complete tool solution to redefine the way pro users work," said Ken Hefley, senior vice president marketing, Makita U.S.A. "The LXT solution is all muscle and no fat, with 18 volt power and 12 volt weight. LXT allows the pro user to work longer with a better engineered tool solution."

Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries and ENERGY STAR qualified Rapid Optimum Charger provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18V Ni-Cd batteries, Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time. Makita's 18V Lithium-Ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles - three times more than Ni-Cd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and sixteen firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power.

During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Rapid Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Rapid Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery in only 30 minutes, and an 18V Compact Lithium-Ion battery in only 15 minutes.

Makita also offers an Optimum Automotive Charger for 18V LXT and 18V Compact Lithium-Ion batteries, which plugs into 12V DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more. The LXT Series also offers a jobsite radio, rechargeable flashlights, and several different combo kits.

Makita now offers 12V max Lithium-Ion and 7.2V Lithium-Ion cordless power tools. These cordless tools deliver pro power and pro speed in a compact size. The battery chargers for the 12V max and 7.2V Lithium-Ion batteries are ENERGY STAR qualified for their efficient charging performance. Makita's growing line of compact cordless tool solutions includes driver-drills and impact drivers, as well as a circular saw, rechargeable flashlights and several different combo kits. Makita also offers a 36V LXT Lithium-Ion cordless rotary hammer for faster drilling.

Warranty
Makita LXT Lithium-Ion is backed by Makita's new Three-Year Warranty which covers repair due to defective materials or workmanship up to three years from the purchase date.
