April 17, 2002 - TCS SP2 AOBS (Acousto-Optical Beam Splitter) adapts from single- to multi-chromatic characteristics of any type providing spectral imaging and measurement environment for multi-fluorescent samples. Compared with conventional beam splitter equipped confocals, TCS SP2 AOBS provides automatic adjustment to selected laser lines, greater transparency, sharper wavelength selection, rapid wavelength switching, and precision for FRET measurements.

Leica Microsystems, Inc. Introduces The New Leica TCS SP2 AOBS Spectral Confocal Microscope

March, 2002
Leica Microsystems announces the new Leica TCS SP2 AOBS (Acousto-Optical Beam Splitter), the first confocal microscope to replace conventional Beam Splitters with a freely programmable device. The new TCS SP2 AOBS represents unique technology and a fundamental breakthrough in confocal microscopy.

Beam Splitters reflect exciting light toward a sample and transmit emitted fluorescent light for detection. The Leica TCS SP2 AOBS precisely and rapidly adapts from single- to multi-chromatic characteristics of any type. It resembles an infinite set of multi-chroic beam splitters and provides an ideal spectral imaging and measurement environment for multi-fluorescent samples.

Compared with "conventional" beam splitter equipped confocals, the highly efficient TCS SP2 AOBS provides:
- Automatic adjustment to the selected laser lines
- Greater transparency
- Sharper wavelength selection
- Rapid wavelength switching
- Accurate recording of fluorescent spectra - all dyes at any image point
- Precision for FRET measurements
- New FRET pairs

Combined with the emission side prism spectrophotometer "SP", the TCS SP2 AOBS operates entirely without filters. "The new AOBS in combination with a selectable emission window finally gives the user complete freedom to combine dyes for confocal
analysis," remarks Dr. Harald Hutter, researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany. "Since the AOBS automatically adjusts to the
selected laser lines, the user can simply forget about it - extremely user friendly!" For more information call 610/321-0460.
