Resulting tough, soft, flexible fabric is resistant to weld splatter and direct flame contact. Its composition and multiple, heavy-duty layers, provides protection for equipment and personnel by ensuring effective horizontal capture of concentrated spatter and red-hot cut pieces. Even when wet, fabric retains more than 75% of its strength.

AMI Raises the Bar on Welding and Hotwork Safety With New ‘Carbo-Glas’ Fabric

MECHANIC FALLS, Maine, October 22, 2002—Auburn Manufacturing Inc. (AMI), a leader and pioneer in the production of high-performance fabrics and textiles for extreme-temperature industrial applications, has introduced yet another groundbreaking product: CARBO-GLAS.

Designed for heavy-duty welding applications, CARBO-GLAS is a composite fabric that is produced by sandwiching the established AMI-GLAS fabric between two layers of partially carbonized acrylic non-woven fabric. The result is an extremely tough, yet soft and flexible, fabric that is better able to resist weld splatter and direct flame than all-carbon or all-glass fabrics the company tested.

“We are extremely excited with this innovation because it will substantially raise the bar on welding and hotwork safety,” said Kathie M. Leonard, AMI’s president and CEO. “Through both its composition and its multiple, heavy-duty layers, CARBO-GLAS will provide an unprecedented level of protection to equipment and personnel by ensuring effective horizontal capture of concentrated spatter and red-hot cut pieces.”

Leonard noted that in a controlled comparison to both all-carbon and all-glass fabrics, AMI’s researchers observed that CARBO-GLAS held up to five times more slag than non-reinforced carbon fiber fabrics, and 60% more molten slag than non-carbonized glass fabrics. She added that even when wet, the new fabric retained more than 75% of its strength—while the non-reinforced carbon fabric that was tested retained less than 50%. “That is critical data for plants where both heat and moisture are prevalent,” Leonard said.
