Agilent Technologies Introduces Manufacturing 10G DCA with PON Filter Rates and Industry-First Smart Post Processing

Enables Optical Transceiver Manufacturers to Increase Throughput, Minimize Cost of Test

SAN DIEGO, Calif., OFC/NFOEC, Booth 1719, March 23, 2009 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the PXIT 10G Digital Communication Analyzer (DCA), Passive Optical Network (PON) filter rate options and smart post processing for the PXIT N2100B DCA, helping optical transceiver test vendors reduce their cost of test.

This latest addition to the PXIT product family makes it the most complete manufacturing test series on the market that helps decrease cost of test and increase throughput.

The PXIT family of products and the new unique smart post processing feature on the N2100B DCA are designed to address the requirements of optical transceiver manufacturers. While the 10GigE standards were defined years ago and this technology is considered mature, growth has been slow until recently. The high -- and growing -- demand for 10GigE transceivers at even lower prices is driving the need to decrease the cost of test. This in turn is pushing optical transceiver manufacturers to look for lower-cost and higher-throughput capital equipment. Agilent's new 10G PXIT DCA offers transceiver manufacturers the opportunity to expand their test lines and thus increase throughput while minimizing cost of test.

PON is seen by many as being the key low-cost FTTX solution in the Access world and is experiencing high growth with very high cost pressure. The new compliant receiver options, also referred to as filters, on the PXIT DCA will enable PON transceiver manufacturers to use the PXIT family of products to test PON transceivers cost effectively.

The 10G PXIT N2100B Option 300 DCA complements the existing 8.5G PXIT option 100 DCA. The additional filter rate options for PON are available for both option 100 and 300 on the N2100B DCA. These new releases also complement the existing PXIT family of products, which include the 10.3G N2101 BERT and N2102 pattern generator.

"Minimizing the cost of test is the key goal for all optical transceiver manufacturers," said Juergen Beck, general manager of Agilent's digital and photonic test business. "With the new PXIT DCA we further enhance our PXIT manufacturing test platform for optical transceivers, address the need for reduced cost of test and provide the most complete manufacturing solution for optical transceivers up to 10.3G."

Smart post processing features and benefits include:

o Data acquisition rate of the PXIT DCA (160 MS/s), which is magnitudes faster than traditional R&D focused sampling scopes.

o Ability for transceiver manufacturers to capture multiple sets of eye diagrams under different test conditions and then process this data during downtime. Examples of DCA downtime could be when a DUT is being replaced or while the DUT's temperature is stabilizing.

o Significantly shorter test times, potentially a factor of 10 to 15 times for some DCA tests.
