New EMC Atmos 2.0 Manages Big Data - 5x Faster and 65% More Efficient

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced EMC Atmos 2.0, the next generation of EMC's globally accessible cloud storage platform, providing more powerful and efficient management of distributed big data and cloud environments -- now 5X faster and 65% more efficient.

EMC Atmos is designed to manage information for content-rich high-scale infrastructures and cloud service provider environments. Its flexible architecture adapts easily to run in virtualized environments, or within an EMC purpose-built, low-cost, high-density hardware system. The new Atmos 2.0 is armed with brand new features for managing big data:

-- Stores object segments rather than entire objects across distributed storage environments for unmatched protection. For example, customers using new GeoParity software in production today are realizing a 65% efficiency improvement across 4-site Atmos deployments, resulting in a significant reduction in cost to serve.
-- Provides transparent access to the cloud. The new Atmos GeoDrive is a secure and fast way for Windows users and applications to gain cloud access. The new software enables customers to simply install, and in a matter of minutes, transparently begin moving data to the cloud.
-- Simplifies the integration of applications with a new EMC Atmos Software Development Kit (SDK), with added support for Apple iOS and Centera integrated applications via Centera/XAM.

Additionally, Atmos will offer interoperability for Amazon S3 customers. This new interoperability API will initially run in beta and provide Amazon S3 customers with flexibility and choice to extend their storage needs to Atmos-based cloud storage.

Supporting Quotes

"I believe that the functionality and ability to scale that EMC Atmos brings to the enterprise, is on the short list of being one of the top storage innovations of the decade," said Rich Harper, Storage Design Architect at Cisco.

"We see growing demand for cloud storage services across our enterprise client base," said PJ Farmer, Director of Product Management for Cloud Storage Solutions at Savvis, Inc. "Savvis is well positioned to address that demand thanks to our selection of EMC Atmos, which has allowed us to rapidly deliver our new cloud storage service to market. This partnership around Atmos is strong because EMC understands the cloud storage market and Savvis has the expertise, having brought the first cloud computing solution to market in 2003."

"In Australia, Ninefold is known for innovation. In delivering the first truly Australian-based cloud storage service that offers a 'swipe and go' scalable service, we needed a trusted cloud platform," said Peter James, Managing Director at Ninefold. "EMC Atmos was the clear choice when it came to finding a complete solution that could help us get our service up and running in a short period of time. We trusted putting our name on a service powered by EMC Atmos."

"As we transform existing siloed archives to community based clouds, EMC Atmos has been pivotal in providing the cloud architectures to make this happen," said John Halamka MD, CIO, CareGroup. "Now with the availability of the CAS interface, we will be able to seamlessly connect and migrate existing Centera based applications to the Atmos cloud. EMC Atmos for medical imaging has been a winner."

EMC Executive Quote

"EMC pioneered cloud optimized storage in 2008 with the introduction of EMC Atmos -- a first of its kind to cost-effectively manage massive amounts of data, that is geographically dispersed -- through a single system," said Mike Feinberg, General Manager and Senior Vice President of the Cloud Infrastructure Group at EMC. "Today's announcement is about three things -- Atmos product maturation, helping our customers efficiently and cost-effectively manage and protect big data environments, and accelerating an organization's ability -- whether it's a service provider or an enterprise -- to exploit the benefits of cloud."
