Tyco Electronics Introduces New Polyswitch(TM) RKEF Device

Small Form-Factor Circuit Protection Device is Designed to Replace PolySwitch RXEF Device in Compact Electronic Systems

MENLO PARK, Calif. -- September 30, 2008 -- Tyco Electronics announced today the introduction of a new line of PolySwitch(TM) circuit protection devices. Designed for use in a wide variety of general electronic products -- ranging from industrial controls to battery packs -- the new PolySwitch(TM) RKEF devices are functionally equivalent to the company's existing RXEF overcurrent protection devices, but are available in a significantly smaller form factor.

"PolySwitch RXEF devices are very popular with designers of many different types of electronic products," said Jasmine Hu, product manager for Tyco Electronics' Raychem Circuit Protection Products business unit. "They are widely used in satellite video receivers, industrial control applications, transformers, computer motherboards, modems, IEEE-1394 ports, game machines, battery packs, phones, fax machines, and analog and digital line cards. Increasing demand for smaller components to accommodate the design requirements of smaller electronics led to the development of the RKEF series of PolySwitch devices. A full 30% smaller than the RXEF series, the RKEF devices provide the same reliable, resettable overcurrent protection and help facilitate shrinking design architectures."

Key device parameters for the PolySwitch RKEF series include hold-current ratings of 0.50A to 5.00A and trip-current ratings of 1.00A to 10.0A. All devices have a maximum operating voltage rating of 60V and can operate at up to 85°C - the same maximum operating temperature as the RXEF series.

PolySwitch RKEF devices are of through-hole construction, and many of the radial-leaded devices have the same lead spacing as the RXEF devices. This facilitates easy replacement of RXEF devices and can help designers optimize board space and improve thermal conditions. Lead spacing for the RKEF250 and RKEF300 devices is half that of the equivalent RXEF parts, yielding even more space.

PolySwitch RKEF devices are EU ROHS and ELV compliant, are compatible with industry standard installation procedures, and are available in tape and reel packaging for compatibility with high-volume manufacturing.
