BASF Introduces Lugalvan(TM) Passivation

Lugalvan(TM) Passivation: the future of conversion coating for galvanized steel strip

FLORHAM PARK, NJ, October 24, 2008 - BASF Corporation is presenting Lugalvan(TM) Passivation, a RoHS compliant chemical passivation for galvanized steel sheets that is heavy metal and fluoride free, at the 100th anniversary meeting of the Galvanizers Association on Oct. 27, 2008, in Baltimore, Maryland. Please visit BASF booth 117 in the ballroom of the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront.

Lugalvan Passivation is an occupational and environmentally safe1 choice that is also chromium and fluoride-free. The RoHS compliant product is ready to use in existing plant configuration for spray-squeegee and chem-coater lines.

Lugalvan Passivation is a non-toxic chemical passivation that offers additional benefits for customers of steel makers. Some of these benefits are direct paintability, which may enable reduction in processing steps and cost, and formability and compatibility with common forming lubricants, which offers easier processing at steel plants, eliminating hazardous waste treatment, which can result in significant cost savings. Since it is compatible with common forming lubricants, it will meet the resistivity requirement of 1 mili-ohm for all electronic applications.

The environmentally friendly profile of Lugalvan Passivation can help with improved sustainability records of steel companies and benefit the recyclability of galvanized steel products.

"We are exclusively evaluating BASF's Lugalvan Passivation as the non-chrome RoHS compliant product for California Steel," said Vic Maldonado, Manager of Metallurgical and Quality Service at California Steel Industries. "We are especially encouraged by the corrosion protection properties, stain-resistance, low resistivity and paintability profiles."

The galvanized steel industry produces steel products that are sold mainly in the construction, automotive, appliance and electrical equipment industries. There are approximately 25-30 steel companies in North America who manufacture these steel products with either the hot dip galvanized or electrogalvanized methods.

The new Lugalvan Passivation product offers a combination of performance, quality, sustainability and value to steel companies and their customers.
BASF has been trialing Lugalvan Passivation extensively in the United States and Europe.
