Original Press Release:

New Catalyst Screening Unit Generates High Quality Data 24 Hours Each and Every Day

Designed for long-term, continuous operation and to ensure realistic and reliable test results, the new Catalyst Screening Unit (CSU) from Strata Technology provides fast 'plug and play' analysis for a variety of demanding applications. These include hydrocarbon alkylation, hydrogenation, hydrotreatment, isomerisation, partial or total oxidation and Fischer-Tropsch reactions, among others.

Strata's CSU precisely mimics the commercial process anticipating and fully evaluating any potential problems in 'scale-up'. In addition to catalyst manufacturers, typical users are the continuous refining and chemical process industries and research chemists in academia.

Comprising a feed module, reactor, post-reactor conditioning and analysis, and a control and data-logging system the rig meets the safety standards essential in a modern laboratory. It can be left unattended with confidence and will generate high quality process data 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

On-line analysis typically is delivered via a fast gas chromatograph and a complete feed and product analysis can be completed within 10 minutes. The unit is entirely compatible with the latest high-speed analytical systems such as Fast GC or Mass Spectroscopy.

Strata CEO, Steve Petridis, said "We know from our many customers that Strata's catalyst screening kit consistently generates data proven to be of a much higher quality than competitive units. We put this down to our 15 years plus experience in this specialist technology and the close relationships we have developed with the R&D community. They really appreciate the durability and flexibility of our equipment and the added-value we provide over lab units designed for a quick 'look-see'. Because this CSU is pre-commissioned we anticipate significant interest from our growing export markets."

Self-contained and measuring a compact 800 x 1000 x 2000 mm high this rugged, wheel-in unit arrives fully certified and ready to produce accurate data with minimum set-up time.

Constructed from corrosion resistant alloys for maximum longevity - in excess of 10 years - the Strata unit has a modular design to enable rapid customization with off-the-shelf components easily configured for specific applications.

Entry point to the rig is an adaptable feed arrangement for permanent gases, condensable gases and liquids. An optional module to pre-heat and/or vaporise the stream can also contain a 'guard bed' to protect the process catalyst from feed stream contaminants.

A range of fixed bed reactor assemblies from 10 to 50 ml catalyst volume have operating pressures up to 100 bar gauge, with pressure relief through a rupture disc. Operating temperatures are up to 550 deg C, with three to five individually controllable heater zones. Alternative reactor designs for sub-ambient operation can be provided.

A range of options for post-reactor conditioning is also available. Reactor pressure control is normally via a back-pressure regulator, but with an electronic controller if automation of the reactor pressure setting is required. Post-reactor pipework can be trace heated. Knock out pot(s) can be provided for the trapping of heavier products to allow off-line analysis, with options for a cooling jacket and/or an internal cooling coil. Mechanical or electronic indication of flow at any point in the process stream can be provided as an option.

The rig has a PLC-based control system using a PC as the man-machine interface. A dial-in facility from most remote locations is also possible. Safety is addressed through tested and certified pressure systems, an emergency shut down system independent of the PLC and, if required, flammable and/or toxic gas detection within the enclosure integrated with the shut-down system.
