Greene, Tweed Launches New WR™ 575 Carbon Fiber Technology

Delivers Reliability And Efficiency In Extreme Operating Conditions

Kulpsville, PA (March 2003) - When extreme operating conditions lead to costly performance failures in bearings lubricated with oil, the new WR™ 575 is a durable and economical alternative.

The reason for failure is clear. Experience shows that hydrodynamic or fluid film bearings work as long as oil film is sufficient to prevent contact. But these bearings can wear out in equipment that requires frequent starts and stops. In these demanding start-and-stop conditions, oil can collapse, allowing continued contact that results in costly bearing replacements.

By contrast, the WR 575—from Greene, Tweed—avoids the problems of oil lubrication. The product is made from an innovative carbon fiber composite material that assures critical durability, corrosion and heat resistance, and reduced need for maintenance, even in the most extreme conditions. WR 575 delivers an advantage profile that also establishes it as the appropriate complement for Greene, Tweed's WR™ 300 and WR™ 525.

Applications versatility is key. The WR 575 material makes it ideal in sleeves, rings, and thrust pads used in gas turbines, steam turbines, hydroelectric turbines, centrifugal compressors, centrifugal blowers, centrifugal pumps, and gearboxes. In particular, thrust pads made of WR 575 material avoid the high-temperature and oil-viscosity problems associated with thrust pads made of carbon steel and a thin layer of babbitt.
