June 12, 2003 - CDX Solid Carbide Drills, utilizing Balzers Futura Nano TiALN coating, offer 130° 4-facet thinned point with convex cutting edges. Thicker than standard web gives strength to drill, enabling higher penetration rates to be attained. Futura Nano has higher aluminum content than standard TiALN coating, which provides thermal stability and imparts hot hardness to drill. Drills are offered in short and long lengths with stepped shank and through coolant option.

New Coating Adds Productivity to Dormer CDX Carbide Drills

Asheville, NC June 6, 2003...Dormer Tools Inc. announces increased productivity for its CDX solid carbide drills utilizing Balzers Futura Nano TiALN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride) coating. CDX drills offers a 130º four-facet thinned point with convex cutting edges and a faster helix angle than most other carbide drills, to allow rapid chip evacuation at higher productivity. A thicker than standard web gives strength to the drill, enabling higher penetration rates to be attained. Futura Nano has a higher aluminum content than standard TiALN coatings, which means that CDX drills can be operated at higher cutting conditions due to the thermal stability and hot hardness imparted to the drill by this coating. The single layer nano structure of the coating ensures the cutting edges are kept sharper, as the coating follows the profile of the tool more closely. This achieves a reduced co-efficient of friction, and, coupled with the increase in hardness and maximum operating temperature, leads to longer tool life for these CDX drills.

Futura Nano coated CDX drills are available in short and long lengths with stepped shank and through coolant option for both lengths - R553 and R557 (through coolant) and R554 and R558 (non-coolant through). The number of sizes in the new CDX ranges has been increased, compared to previous ranges. The R590 CDX double margin drill also benefits from this coating, while the R510 CDX jobber drill and the R520 CDX stub drill remain TiN coated.
