National Semiconductor Introduces Industry's Lowest Jitter Cable Equalizer for Extending DVI and HDMI Cable Reach Beyond 40 Meters

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 5 // -- National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM), a leading supplier of high-performance analog signal-path products, today introduced a cable equalizer that enables video professionals and consumers to extend the reach of their digital visual interface (DVI) and high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cable connections beyond 40 meters. The device also extends the reach of low-cost CAT5 cables to more than 20 meters. Extending signal routing distance between the video source and digital television receiver or computer display is becoming increasingly important in today's video applications.

National's DS16EV5110 equalizes cable signals encoded in the transition- minimized differential signaling (TMDS) format. The cable equalizer is targeted at a wide range of video systems, including DVI/HDMI switches, routers and extenders, plasma and liquid crystal display high-definition TVs (LCD HDTVs), LCD and digital light processing (DLP) front and rear projectors, and medical imaging equipment. The device features the industry's lowest total jitter of 0.13 unit intervals (UI), which was achieved using National's proprietary BiCMOS-8 technology. National will demonstrate this product at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 16-19 at Booth N5117. The DS16EV5110 also can be seen on National's Analog by Design Show (http://national.com/nationaltv), online reality TV for analog design engineers.

National optimized the DS16EV5110 for operation from 0.25 Gbps to 1.65 Gbps and made it compliant with the DVI v1.0 and HDMI v1.2a standards. At 1.65 Gbps data rate, the device extends cable reach to more than 40 meters over 24 American Wiring Gauge (AWG) DVI/HDMI cable, 25 meters over 28 AWG DVI/HDMI cable and 20 meters over CAT5/5e/6 cable. The device also operates up to 2.25 Gbps when supporting 1080p HDTV resolution (with 12-bit deep-color depth) beyond 30 meters over 24 AWG HDMI cable. The equalizer supports digital TV resolutions of 480i/p, 720i/p and 1080i/p, as well as all computer resolutions from video graphics array (VGA) to wide quad extended graphics array (WQXGA).

Technical Features of the DS16EV5110 TMDS Video Equalizer

Offered in a small 7 mm by 7 mm 48-pin leadless LLP(R) package, the DS16EV5110 features three equalized TMDS data channels and one clock channel. The clock channel provides an adjustable signal detect, which sends an alert when a loss-of-signal (LOS) occurs. Each channel can be easily set to one of eight different boost settings through pin control or an integrated system management bus (SMBus). This flexibility allows the system designer to optimize the trace/cable length and reduce inter-symbol interference. By comparison, devices with fixed equalization provide too much boost for short trace lengths and introduce unwanted jitter.

The DS16EV5110 is powered from a 3.3V supply and typically consumes 420 mW while operating over the -40 degrees to 85 degrees C temperature range. The device's standby mode reduces overall system power consumption, and its equalizer channels can be programmed to match the skin loss effect of shielded-twisted pair DVI, HDMI or unshielded CAT5 cables. The device also features 8 kV of electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection.
