Heat deflection temperature is 127°C, light transmission is 91%, and melt viscosity permits production of ultrathin light guide plates for displays in mobile devices. Product also exhibits low birefringence and high molding accuracy (submicron detail replication).

TOPAS 5013L-10 COC Targets Optical, Diagnostic, and Microfluidic Markets

FLORENCE, Ky. — TOPAS Advanced Polymers has expanded its line of TOPAS 5013 cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) resins for injection molding of high-performance components for the optical, diagnostic, and microfluidic markets. The new grade, TOPAS 5013L-10, has won strong early acceptance because it features an internal mold release which delivers an exceptional balance of properties and easy processing.

“The boost in processability from the internal mold release has made this new grade the go-to choice for components with high aspect ratios, precision details, and other molding challenges,” said Timothy Kneale, president of TOPAS Advanced Polymers, Inc.

The new product features exceptional clarity, high flow, and a heat deflection temperature of 127°C. It is characterized by the highest level of flowability among transparent resins without loss of material strength and optical characteristics. The material’s low melt viscosity permits the production of ultrathin light guide plates unachievable with conventional materials. These plates are ideal for displays in mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones.

TOPAS 5013L-10 also delivers low birefringence and high molding accuracy (submicron detail replication) for optical parts such as lenses, optical storage media, as well as for medical and diagnostic applications. The heat resistance and purity are ideal for DNA analysis, including typical 95°C PCR protocols.

Productivity is enhanced with the reduction of spool runners and the use of multi-cavity molds, along with easier demolding. Other key advantages over competitive materials include high light transmission of 91%, low water absorption resulting in reduced warpage, and significantly less discoloration resulting from deterioration with age.

TOPAS 5013L-10 resin is available globally and has found commercial use in microfluidics, diagnostics, and optics, including automotive and mobile device displays.
