New SETCO 170mm Motorized CNC 'Smart' Spindle Offers Improved Reliability & Versatility to High Speed Machining
CINCINNATI, OH (September 8, 2004) - On display at IMTS 2004, Booth #4609 will be the new SETCO(TM) 170 high-speed super-precision closed loop motorized CNC spindle designed to deliver speed, power, performance, and reliability for high performance machine tools. The 170 spindle combines robust architecture with a standard, proven spindle design to maximize application performance.
With the new SETCO 170 solution, the end-user builds a custom high-speed spindle by selecting the desired speed range from a list of standard options that results in a high-performance, reliable solution that meets exact application needs and is less costly to maintain than an "off-the-shelf" high-speed spindle. When purchasing typical off-the-shelf high-speed spindles, end-users often must settle for what is available. This selection limitation results in a spindle that is perhaps less robust than what is truly needed, more expensive to operate, and by matching and paying for speed compatibility, less reliable.
The 170 high-speed spindle utilizes advanced technology in bearing design and materials. The spindle is equipped with ABEC Class 7 high nitrogen steel bearings and hybrid ceramic balls. Spindles up to 20,000 rpm are grease lubricated with a special SETCO high-speed grease, eliminating the need for air-oil lubrication sub-systems.
The SETCO 170 is a liquid cooled spindle designed to operate from zero to 18,000, 20,000, or 24,000 rpm, and delivers up to 30 kW (40 hp) at 12,000 rpm and 23.8 N-m (211 in-lbs) of torque under continuous duty. At 0.000080" TIR, the 170 delivers high-speed performance and accuracy on the spindle face and taper.
The 170 is designed with a removable mounting flange that allows it to be easily customized to most applications. All air, electric and oil lube connections are at the rear of the spindle providing a compact and easy to maintain package. The spindle is designed for HSK-A63 tool interface and power drawbar. It is equipped with an enclosed encoder and signal ring for closed loop speed control. In addition, electrical connections are equipped with quick connect couplings. For protection, the 170 is equipped with internal sensors that monitor motor temperature and signal an alert when conditions are harmful to spindle performance.
The new SETCO 170 CNC 'Smart' spindle is equipped with the patented AirShield(TM) spindle seal system over 4000 in service and all operating without a failure-- the AirShield is the best and most reliable seal system in the industry. As standard, the 170 CNC spindle comes with a 1-Year warranty and a limited 3-Year warranty on the spindle seal system for protection against coolant/contamination ingress.
