Carrier Corp.'s Energy Analysis Tools

Fast Path to More Sustainable Building Solutions

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Carrier Corp. has enhanced its industry leading Hourly Analysis Program (HAP) software for building energy analysis and system design, launching version 4.5. With its enhanced features, HAP v4.5 can be used to configure a complete energy analysis for sustainable high performance buildings in a matter of minutes. Carrier Corp., a world leader in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR), is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

Building upon features first introduced in 2008, HAP v4.5 provides the next step in intelligent technology for both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)® Energy and Atmosphere Credit 1 (EAc1) analysis and schematic design energy analysis. New features include automatic determination of ASHRAE 90.1 minimum required equipment efficiencies and software wizards for creating weather data and utility rates. Combined with the existing wizards for building and HVAC equipment data, the new features make a comprehensive energy analysis quick and easy.

"The way buildings are designed is rapidly changing. The desire to create sustainable designs, achieve LEED certification and improve project efficiency is fostering collaboration early in the project lifecycle. Through HAP v4.5, building design can be optimized by quickly assessing 'what if' scenarios to determine which have the greatest potential for energy efficiency or for LEED EAc1 points," stated James Pegues, development manager of Carrier's E20-II software. "Based on high level inputs, the software automatically constructs a complete, detailed virtual model."

"Today over 10,000 design professionals worldwide depend on HAP to support the design of high performance buildings," stated John Mandyck, Carrier's vice president for Sustainability and Environmental Strategies. "HAP's schematic design and LEED-oriented features foster productivity gains which help these professionals design high performance buildings faster and more efficiently. Sustainable buildings of the future require the comprehensive, easy-to-use analysis tools that HAP offers."

In HAP, a "wizard" guides the user through creation of the model, asking a short series of high-level questions and then automatically filling in the details with intelligent defaulting. The wizard features in v4.5 allow users to quickly perform the following tasks:

- Select weather data;

- Create a building thermal model;

- Configure HVAC equipment scenarios;

- Input utility rates, including electricity and fuel prices.

An added feature ties all four wizards together to utilize all the data sets in an energy analysis.
