September 8, 2011 - Leveraging 3 Gbps technology, Model GS3480 features dual non-inverted SDI outputs, while Model GS3481 provides 4 non-inverted outputs. Adjustable output pre-emphasis compensates for losses associated with thin cables, long cable runs, and high-density connectors. With output swing of 2,400 mV, Model GS3480 supports large system architectures that require external passive muxing, external cable and connector losses associated with patch panels, and other architectures that cause DC loss.

Gennum Unveils Industry's Most Advanced 3Gb/s Cable Drivers for Broadcast Video Market

Next-Generation 3Gb/s Cable Drivers Feature Industry-First Signal Pre-Emphasis on Non-Inverted Outputs

BURLINGTON, ON, - Gennum Corporation (TSX: GND), a global leader in advanced signal integrity solutions for the broadcast video industry, today announced the addition of two new, feature-packed 3Gb/s cable drivers to its extensive portfolio of broadcast video semiconductor solutions. Leveraging Gennum's expertise in 3Gb/s technology, the dual output GS3480 and its quad-output variant, the GS3481, uniquely combine an array of new features that directly address key applications in the rapidly evolving broadcast video market.

Gennum's unique expertise in broadcast technology helps deliver high-performance products for the most demanding real-world applications. For example, in outside-broadcast and large studio applications, long cable runs are becoming the new norm. In addition, the use of high-density connectors and thinner cables is becoming commonplace.

The GS3480 is the industry's only cable driver that features adjustable output pre-emphasis. Output pre-emphasis can be used to compensate for losses associated with thinner cables, long cable runs, high-density connectors and mid-plane and backplane connectors. In addition, the GS3480 features dual non-inverted SDI outputs while the GS3481 features four non-inverted outputs. A common real-world application for cable drivers is to handle polarity sensitive signal formats such as DVB-ASI.

With its non-inverted outputs, the GS3480 can support DVB-ASI without additional downstream hardware, simplifying design considerations, while lowering development and BOM costs.

"In our decades as a leading innovator in broadcast solutions, Gennum has developed a deep understanding of our customers' applications," said Bharat Tailor, Director of Video Marketing for Gennum. "This thorough knowledge guided our design of the GS3480, allowing us to deliver its unique feature set."

The GS3480 cable driver also features the industry's largest output swing at 2400mV. This high output swing supports larger system architectures that require external passive muxing, external cable and connector losses associated with patch panels, and other system architectures that cause DC loss.

Availability

Gennum will be demonstrating the new 3Gb/s cable driver in its booth (#9.A45) at the upcoming IBC 2011 tradeshow held in Amsterdam September 9-13(th).

The GS3480 3Gb/s cable driver and its four-output variant the GS3481 will be sampling in September 2011 with initial production planned in Q4 2011.
