Breather prevents in-service lubricant degradation.

Press Release Summary:

Hydroguard(TM), suited for moisture-laden applications, combines functions of filtration, desiccant, and membrane technology to eliminate ingression of dirt and water through filler/breather port. Able to withstand direct wash-down spray, system incorporates controlled breathing mechanism that makes system breath only when pressured to do so. Breather is manufactured from engineered plastic and handles air volume caused by thermal expansion and contraction.

New Technology Hydroguard(TM) Breather by Des-Case Corporation Helps Prevent In-service Lubricant Degradation

Niche product targets moisture-laden applications

White House, Tenn. -- Des-Case Corporation, an innovator of breather technology for industrial markets, today announced the extension of its product family with the launch of Hydroguard(TM). This next generation breather is the ideal solution for the management of lubricant condition in high humidity applications where there is an increased incidence of gearbox and lubricant failure due to moisture ingress. Typical applications are found in food processing, forest products, pulp and paper, mining and steel industries.

The patent-pending hybrid design combines the functions of filtration, desiccant and membrane technology into one cost-effective package to effectively eliminate ingression of dirt and water through the filler/breather port. Ideal for gearboxes and other low flow applications (such as pumps, bearing houses and storage drums/totes), Hydroguard offers superior protection and optimizes reliability of lubricants and related machinery.

"Hydroguard breathers simplify the maintenance of lubricants exposed to large amounts of water, such as washdown applications common in food processing and pulp and paper industries," said Brian Gleason, general manager of Des-Case Corporation. "By maintaining, and even improving, lubricant condition in these situations, Hydroguard breathers can help prevent downtime and improve reliability substantially."

A major benefit of the Hydroguard breather is that lubricants are virtually isolated from surrounding contaminants. The system 'breathes' yet can withstand driving rain or direct wash-down spray. A diaphragm allows for expansion and contraction of air within the casing as a result of temperature variation during steady state operations. Enclosed filter media protects down to 3um, while the desiccant stack prohibits moisture entry.

But what really differentiates the breather from competing models is its 'controlled breathing' mechanism. Check valves provide slight system pressurization that allow for controlled breathing without excessive temperature build-up. The system breathes only when pressured to do so, and then the air is cleaned and dried before it is introduced into the system, ensuring a clean, dry headspace. This control mechanism also prevents premature saturation of the silica gel and extends the breather time life, a problem not as easily tackled by standard desiccant breathers exposed to extensive moisture.

Hydroguard breathers are manufactured from an engineered plastic and handle air volume caused by thermal expansion and contraction only. Replacing the standard filler/breather cap, the unit incorporates a slip-fit design for easy adaptation to any size reservoir opening. Because of the self-adjusting design, Hydroguard may be installed on a hot or cold system.

The disposable breather should be changed when the silica gel color indicator turns from blue to pink, visible through the clear breather casing-or-after one year of service. Periodic visual inspection of the check valve is also recommended to ensure freedom from obstruction.

Celebrating its 20th year, privately held Des-Case Corporation designs, manufactures and markets a complete line of breathers for a wide range of industries and applications. The company's products feature designs unparalleled in the marketplace and are used wherever lubricant life and performance are essential to daily operations. Headquartered in White House, Tenn., the Des-Case and Hydroguard brand of breathers are sold through an international distribution network.
