Fenwal(TM) Launches the Fenwal Express(TM) System, Offering a Simple, Streamlined Approach to Automatic Air Elimination

ROUND LAKE, Ill., Aug. 1 /-- Fenwal, Inc., announced today that it launched the Fenwal Express(TM) System, an automatic air elimination system exclusive to its integral whole blood filter Blood-Pack(R) units. Offering an integrated, streamlined approach to automatic air elimination immediately following blood filtration, the Fenwal Express System requires no manual squeezing of air from the post-filter container, or priming to get started. In addition, it includes no caps to manipulate or vents to use, making it a truly closed system and eliminates steps associated with other automatic air elimination systems.

"The Fenwal Express represents an exciting enhancement to our whole blood product portfolio and was developed in response to customer requests for a simple air elimination solution," said Fenwal President and CEO, Ron Labrum. "This supports our strong focus and attention on continuing to develop new and better products for manual and automated blood collection and processing in response to what our customers need most."

With the Fenwal Express System operators simply need to clamp the bypass line, break the cannula to begin filtration, and once filtration is complete, unclamp the bypass line to allow air to automatically expel from the post-filter container into the primary container. Studies show that the system leaves little to no air in the post-filter container.

The Fenwal Express System is available on nearly all 500 mL Fenwal whole blood filter Blood-Pack units. For more information or to order product, blood centers may contact their Fenwal Account Executive or call 1-800-3Fenwal (800-333-6925).

The Fenwal Express System is one of several new product enhancements and introductions recently launched by Fenwal. In April, the company introduced the Flex Excel(TM) Integral Red Cell Filter, allowing for the leukoreduction of red blood cells under ambient or refrigerated temperatures, a three-day filtration window and maximized plasma recovery. In March, Fenwal launched an updated software release for its ALYX(R) Component Collection System that introduced a new protocol for the collection of one unit of red blood cells with two to three units of plasma, in addition to its existing double unit red blood cell collection procedure. This month, Fenwal will also launch a new quad Blood-Pack unit with whole blood integral filter that allows for the flexible storage of up to four red blood cell and/or plasma aliquot units.

Fenwal is a leading, global healthcare company focused on the development, manufacture and marketing of products and services for the transfusion medicine industry. The company provides a comprehensive portfolio of products and services for manual and automated blood collection, processing and storage.
