Delphi Offers New CAN-Based Sensor for Monitoring Battery Current, Voltage and Temperature

Technology monitors battery health, making more electronic content possible in vehicles with CAN or LIN interfaces

TROY, Mich. -- Delphi Corp. (PINKSHEETS: DPHIQ) is now offering its innovative IVT battery sensor with a Controller Area Network (CAN) interface in addition to the already-available Local Interconnect Network (LIN) interface. The sensor helps ensure optimal battery performance, improving the integrity of a continuously expanding collection of electronic content in vehicles while ensuring sufficient power for starting the engine.

The sensor precisely measures current (I), voltage (V) and temperature (T), the three parameters essential to determining battery health. Extending the product offering to both CAN and LIN interfaces for data and diagnostic communication makes implementing the sensor simpler and more cost-effective for vehicle manufacturers.

Designed for use in both passenger and commercial vehicles, the CAN-based sensor has the ability to monitor two batteries connected in series in a 24V system. This is commonly seen in the electrical/electronic architecture of commercial vehicles and specialty applications such as marine and military applications. Both versions are also available for 12V systems, more common in traditional automotive applications.

Delphi's IVT Battery Sensor is most frequently located on the negative battery post, however, the device may be mounted in a pre-fuse box on the battery or in a Delphi Electrical Center.
