April 15, 2011 - GreenLight(TM) 910 minimizes testing time and labor required to determine aerobic bacterial counts in meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, and produce for food processing and packing companies. Depending on expected bacterial load, results can be obtained between minutes and 8 hr. Functionality provides aerobic plate count (APC) or total viable count (TVC) of food sample's microbial load using sensing assay or vial, and system can generate unique ID for each test to facilitate tracking.

Mocon's New Greenlight(TM) 910 Unit Provides Cost-Effective,Same-Day Bacterial Detection for Low/Medium Throughput Users


Minneapolis, MN - MOCON, Inc. (NASDAQ: MOCO) is launching a new game-changing bacterial testing system which targets food processing companies with low-to-medium throughput requirements.

The company's GreenLight(TM) 910 unit significantly reduces the testing time and labor needed to determine aerobic bacterial counts in meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, produce, etc. Processors and packers get same-day, precise results in a cost-effective manner.

"The GreenLight(TM) technology will be appealing to most quality control and laboratory professionals because it simplifies, and therefore cuts time out of, the sample prep phase. Depending on the expected bacterial load, results can be obtained between minutes and eight hours. This is significantly faster than the agar or film plate methods, which typically require 48 hours to achieve a meaningful microbial count. Shorter testing cycles provide packers and processors with the potential of getting their perishable food items to the consumer in less time," said Mark Theno, food safety product manager," MOCON.

MOCON's GreenLight(TM) 910 unit provides an aerobic plate count (APC) or total viable count (TVC) of a food sample's microbial load by using a sensing assay or vial. As bacteria in the test sample multiply and respire, they consume oxygen. The change in oxygen is used to calculate the original sample's colony forming units per gram (CFU/g) for solids or per milliliter for liquids.

Additionally, the cost-effective unit has a small bench-top footprint and an easy-to-use PC software interface with multiple measurement modes. It also has the ability to generate a unique ID for each test making it easy to track specific vials in a busy work environment.

The GreenLight(TM) 910 is pending qualification by AOAC International, Gaithersburg, MD, which provides validation and conformity assessment of commercial and analytical methods.

The new unit accompanies the GreenLight 960, which MOCON introduced last year. The 960 is ideal for larger labs requiring higher throughput.

The development of this new, leading-edge technology has been made possible via MOCON's investment in Luxcel Biosciences Limited, Cork, Ireland, which was announced last year.
