March 19, 2008 - Supplied in 2.9 x 2.8 mm SOT23-6 package, SP6699 is suited for space-constrained backlighting applications, such as small displays/keypads in handheld portable devices, where LEDs must be tightly regulated to achieve uniform brightness. It can drive up to 5 series LEDs with only 4 external components and is compatible with PWM dimming up to 1 kHz as well as analog dimming. Able to achieve shutdown current of 3.2 µA, product operates from 2.5-16 V.

Exar Offers Light Emitting Diode (LED) Driver with Inductive Boost Capabilities - Ideal for Space Constrained Backlighting Applications

FREMONT, Calif., March 10 -- Exar Corporation (NASDAQ:EXAR) released a new LED driver with inductive boost capabilities giving system architects additional design options for backlighting applications. The SP6699 is ideal for small display/keypad LED lighting applications found in handheld portable devices such as PDAs, cell phones and data collection devices.

"Added to Exar's full line of industry-proven charge pump LED drivers, an inductive boost device delivers to system architects a highly efficient device for applications where LEDs must be tightly regulated to achieve uniform brightness," said Joe Vyvijal, vice president, Power Product Line. "The SP6699, available in a small 2.9x2.8mm SOT23-6, is capable of driving up to five series LEDs with only four external components."

Key Product Features

The SP6699 is compatible with PWM dimming up to 1 kHz and analog dimming and achieves the shutdown current of 3.2uA. The SP6699 operates from 2.5V all the way up to 16V achieving 84% efficiency using a 0.2V feedback to minimize power loss. The 0.2V feedback is +/-6% accurate over the full operating temperature range. In addition, the SP6699 has an Over Voltage Protection (OVP) to ensure it can not be damaged in the event of an open circuited LED or a shorted feedback resistor.

"A good example of reducing board real estate needs is seen on the SP6699 with the integration of the schottky diode (a switch boost regulator), and by driving up to five LEDs in series display enabling designers to reduce connector pin count," said Eric Pittana, director of product marketing, Power Product Line.
