BI Technologies Develops Automotive Power Inductor Rated for 180°C Operation

Extended temperature range makes power inductor ideal for under hood environments...

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 17, 2009) -- TT electronics BI Technologies, a leading manufacturer of magnetic components including inductors, transformers and common mode chokes, has developed a high-temperature power inductor designed specifically for automotive underhood environments. Designated the HA55 Series, the inductor features a powdered iron alloy core material and is capable of operating at temperatures up to 180°C.

"The HA55 Series power inductors feature a robust design originally developed for use in diesel automobile engine controls," said Donna Schaefer, application engineering manager for TT electronics' BI Technologies.  "The new design and extended specifications allow the inductor to be used as a DC-DC converter and in high-current applications, and we are now seeing many requests for this product for use in power distribution applications for engine management and controls."

Also specified for industrial applications, the HA55 power inductors feature low DCR characteristics for low power losses. Typical rated current inductance values range from 7µH to 20µH, and recommended frequency is up to 400kHz, depending on device. Rated current ranges from 40A to 60A, with a saturation current from 43A to 50A. Typical DC resistance for the inductor ranges from 1.7mW to 3.35mW. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +180°C.  Custom devices are also available.

Typical pricing for the HA55 Series power inductor ranges from $4.20 to $5.95 each in quantities of 10k pieces.  Lead time is from stock to 8 to 10 weeks.
