Isilon Accelerates File-Based Data Back-Up in the Enterprise

New Back-Up Accelerator Leverages OneFS Operating System to Speed Back-up to Tape while Dramatically Simplifying Back-up Management

SEATTLE, June 9 -- Isilon(R) Systems (NASDAQ: ISLN), the proven leader in scale-out NAS, today announced the release of its Back-up Accelerator, advancing performance and simplicity for file-based data back-up to maximize efficiency while minimizing the risk of business-critical data loss. Combining Isilon's new OneFS(R) 5.5 operating system software (see separate release) with 4 Gigabytes per second (GBps) Fibre Channel networking, dual quad core Intel processors, and 8 Gigabytes (GB) of RAM, the Back-up Accelerator delivers up to 480 Megabytes per second (MBps) of performance across four concurrent streams. Enterprise customers can seamlessly add the Back-up Accelerator to any Isilon cluster, providing industry-leading performance, reduced back-up windows, and simplified management for file-based data back-up. Isilon also today announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.'s Digital Media Center is among customers using the new solution to accelerate back-up operations while reducing the time and resources associated with traditional back-up management.

"As enterprise data storage requirements continue to align more closely with the compelling advantages of scale-out NAS, the imperative to effectively and reliably back-up mission-critical, file-based data is greater than ever before," said Sam Grocott, senior director of product management, Isilon Systems. "By leveraging the inherent simplicity of our OneFS operating system software, Isilon's Back-up Accelerator delivers industry-leading performance and ease of use for enterprise back-up operations, eliminating the high cost, complexity, and business risk associated with traditional NAS and SAN."

"Traditional approaches to backup for file-based data become increasingly challenging as the number of files, volumes, and amount of data continue to increase," said Noemi Greyzdorf, research manager, IDC. "Isilon has leveraged its clustered architecture to accelerate file-based back-up."

As file-based data continues to proliferate throughout the enterprise, traditional storage systems are being overwhelmed by rapid growth, large file sizes, and increased complexity. Traditional systems were simply not designed to effectively manage file-based data, resulting in disparate data silos that complicate back-up operations, lengthening back-up windows and jeopardizing data availability. With Isilon IQ and its OneFS operating system, enterprise customers can create a single, high performance, highly scalable, shared pool of storage to unify data stores and reduce system complexity. Leveraging the simplicity and scalability of OneFS, the new Back-up Accelerator delivers an enterprise-class back-up solution for file-based data, delivering up to 480 MBps of performance across four concurrent streams. The Back-up Accelerator can be seamlessly added to an existing Isilon cluster in less than 60 seconds, scaling performance linearly with each additional Back-up Accelerator and eliminating the cost, complexity, and risks of downtime associated with traditional back-up operations.

Pricing and Availability

Isilon's Back-up Accelerator is available immediately and listed at $38,550 per node.
