Vishay Releases New Surface-Mount Ambient Light Sensing Photodiode in 0805-Sized Package with 0.85-mm Profile and Simple 2-Pin Connection

AEC-Q101-Qualified Device Reacts to Light like Human Eye for LCD Brightness Control and Automotive Applications

MALVERN, Pa. - Jan. 30, 2009 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has broadened its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of a photodiode-based ambient light sensor in a compact 0805-sized surface-mount package, featuring a small 0.85-mm profile and simple 2-pin connection. The new TEMD6200FX01 reacts to light like the human eye to allow automatic control of LCD brightness and keypad backlighting and to enable a number of advanced automotive driver comfort and safety features.

The TEMD6200FX01 utilizes Vishay's exclusive infrared filtering epoxy technology to match the spectral sensitivity of the human eye with minimal sensitivity to light beyond the visible range. For consumer electronics, the device reduces power consumption by turning on keypad backlights only in low ambient conditions, and controlling LCD display brightness to optimize viewing based on ambient light.

Designed and qualified according to AEC-Q101 for automotive applications, the TEMD6200FX01 enables automatic headlight control, tunnel sensors, and displays that adjust automatically to changes in ambient brightness. The sensor also serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to cadmium-based photo resistors, the elimination of which has been mandated by RoHS legislation.

The device offers an angle of half sensitivity of ± 60°, a radiant sensitive area of 0.3 mm2, and a peak sensitivity of 540 nm. Good lot-to-lot repeatability over the extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C allows customers to eliminate calibration steps in their manufacturing process.

To enable a floor life of 168 hours without concern for absorption, the TEMD6200FX01 offers a moisture sensitivity level (MSL) of 3, in accordance with J-STD-020. The device is lead (Pb)-free and provides lead-free processing capability in accordance with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC

Samples and production quantities of the TEMD6200FX01 are available now, with lead times of four to six weeks.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1,000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, rectifiers, transistors, and optoelectronics and selected ICs) and passive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, and transducers).
