ZIRCAR Ceramics Introduces Z-500 for Molten Aluminum Contact

ZIRCAR Ceramics, Inc., the Florida, New York manufacturer of high performance ceramic fiber based products is please to announce the introduction of its new Alumina Silica Insulation TYPE Z-500. Designed specifically for use in the transport and continuous casting of molten aluminum, Z-500 features characteristics and properties beneficial to casthouse operators.

Typical characteristics and properties of Z-500 include: a nominal bulk density of 50 pcf (800 kg/m³), a composition of approximately 60% SiO2 40% Al2O3 and an average surface hardness of 93 on the A scale. Z-500 exhibits 0.65% shrinkage after 24 hours at 800C and is completely free of organics. Z-500 is prefired and does not outgas upon heating. Z-500 exhibits excellent non-wetting properties and is fully compatible with silica, alumina and boron nitride coatings.

One of Z-500’s most unique features is the fact that unlike numerous refractory silica bound ceramic fiber products, Z-500 exhibits uniform hardness and density throughout its thickness. This enables this material to be precision machined into customer specified geometries. Applications for Z-500 include but are not limited to: casting nozzles on continuous belt and block casters, metal contact parts in electromagnetic pumps, Steady Eddie flow control valves, head boxes and troughs.
