Dana Corporation Introduces MultiTwister (TM) Air/Oil Separator for a Cleaner Combustion Process



FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept. 14 /-- Dana Corporation (NYSE:DCN) today introduced the new MultiTwister(TM) axial cyclonic air/oil separator, which helps vehicles run cleaner by removing oil particles from the engine's air stream. The technology is on display at Dana's exhibit (Hall 6.1, Stand B30) at the 61st International Motor Show (IAA), which runs through Sept. 25 in Frankfurt, Germany.

The air/oil separator was developed in response to increasingly stringent global emissions standards. The innovative design of the separator reduces both vehicle emissions and vehicle operating costs. It achieves these results by reducing oil consumption and significantly extending oil life.

"The value equation for our customers' engines and vehicles increasingly involves green factors such as fuel and oil consumption, air emissions, and recyclability," said Chuck Heine, president of Technology Development at Dana. "These factors in turn provide Dana's engineering teams with opportunities to challenge old ways of thinking. A good example of this is the MultiTwister separator."

The MultiTwister separator uses "double helix" channels to create a spiral flow, which in turn develops centrifugal forces. This causes oil to coalesce along the channels where it separates the droplets from the engine's airflow. The captured oil is then returned to the engine crankcase, rather than being burned off. Eliminating excess oil from the combustion process reduces the environmental impact and helps lengthen the life of components such as the air mass sensor, catalytic converter, turbocharger, inlet valves, carbon- particulate filter, and intercooler.

The MultiTwister air/oil separator can be easily integrated into Dana's thermoplastic and thermoset cylinder-head covers, reducing system complexity. The separator can also be sold individually to original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for integration into their own cylinder-head cover designs.

Traditionally, OEMs have developed air/oil separators internally. Dana saves its customers purchasing, design, and assembly time by handling the design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and assembly of the cover, gasket, MultiTwister separator, and related components. Dana further reduces complexity by offering automakers a complete module from a single source.

Heine added, "Our development teams were able to develop a new technology that not only ensures that engines run greener, but also benefits consumers by reducing oil consumption and improving powertrain reliability."
