Adapter facilitates quick change for magnetic drills.

Press Release Summary:

Adapter assembly provides quick-release change feature that adapts spindles of drills to use RotaLoc(TM) and the RotaLoc Plus Annular Cutters. It allows use of proprietary tools with Quick-Shank mounting design in drill models HMD505, HMD904, and 10914. With ¾ in. depth of cut, RotaLoc cutters are available 1/2-1 1/16 in dia in 1/16 in. increments and 12-27 mm dia. RotaLoc Plus tools extend size range to 1 3/8 in. and 35 mm and provide 1 in. depth of cut.

New Adapter Makes Quick Change for Magnetic Drills

For some time, users of Hougen Manufacturing's four models of ultra-low profile portable magnetic drills have had the advantage of cutting holes with the company's RotaLoc(TM) and the RotaLoc Plus Annular Cutters featuring the Quick-Shank mounting design for fast, tool-less tool changes. Now, at the 2004 EVITS exhibit, Hougen introduced a new Adapter Assembly with the quick-release change feature that adapts the spindles of their other drill models to use the two RotaLoc series of tools. The adapter makes fast tool change outs and higher productivity accessible to larger, typically more powerful drills, opening up a wider range of fabrication, maintenance and on-site applications for the cutting tools.

RotaLoc cutters are available in sizes from 1/2" thru 1-1/16" diameters in 1/16" increments and 12mm thru 27mm diameter and have a 3/4" depth of cut. The RotaLoc Plus tools extend the size range to 1-3/8" and 35mm and provide a 1" depth of cut. The RotaLoc tools, like all of Hougen's annular cutters, cut round, burr-free holes from 50 to 80% faster than twist drills-with longer tool life. Because they are hollow and have Hougen's unique and time-proven tooth geometry, these cutters typically require less horsepower and torque than traditional holemaking tools. RotaLoc cutters were originally developed for use with the HMD115 Truck Frame drill. At just 6-11/16" high (8-1/2"W x 11-5/8"L), and weighing only 21.3 lb. the drill fits in extremely tight spaces that even hand held drills find troublesome. RotaLoc Plus cutters are used with the HMD150 Rescue Drill, weighing just 22.7 lb. with a low-profile at 7-13/16" high and high-torque gearing for larger holemaking capacities than the HMD115.

The adapter allows the use of the fast change tools with such other Hougen drill models as the HMD505, a dual speed unit that, like the HMD115 and HMD150, features a patented quill feed design to establish a highly stable, rigid platform for drilling high quality holes at exceptional productivity rates. The HMD505 can drill holes up to 2-3/8" diameter thru 3" depths. In addition, models like the compact HMD904 and the 10914 now have quick tool change capability when using the RotaLoc/RotaLoc Plus adapter, while still delivering the power to drill holes of up to 1-1/2" diameter and 2" depths with the HMD904, and 2-1/16" diameter thru 3" thick materials for the 10914 when using Hougen Rotabroach® Annular Cutters.

Other Hougen portable magnetic drills are available with capacities to 3-1/16" diameter and 3" depth of cut. Additional products offered include a complete line of individual and kit-packaged Rotabroach® Annular Cutters for portable drilling and stationary machine tools, cutters specifically designed for sheet metal and plate work, plus Punch-Pro® Electro-hydraulic, single-body and easy-to-use hole punchers along with associated punches and dies.
