Low VOC Avanse(TM) Technology Platform Promises High Performance in Challenging Applications

PHILADELPHIA, July 11 / / - Rohm and Haas (NYSE:ROH) has announced commercialization of their most advanced waterborne acrylic latex polymer, Avanse(TM) MV-100, developed specifically for coating structural steel and concrete surfaces. The company reports that Avanse resin is a first of its kind polymer, an extremely low VOC emitting emulsion that meets all federal and state VOC regulations in formulated coatings.

Avanse technology offers a true environmentally advanced technology in a higher performing resin that allows low VOC coatings to be used in the most demanding applications, where previously only solventborne coatings were suitable. Avanse MV-100 is ideal for primers, topcoats and direct-to-metal finishes. It is formulated to withstand harsh environments typically associated with industrial coating applications and enables improved working conditions for professionals applying the coating.

According to Timothy Wood, PhD, Rohm and Haas global technology director, Industrial and Construction, scientists at the company recognized that to create waterborne, low VOC coatings that are competitive in performance to solventborne coatings, they had to identify ways to improve the barrier properties of the waterborne coatings. They achieved this by designing an acrylic latex polymer which displays a unique interaction with the pigments in the coating, optimizing the distribution of pigment within the dried film and resulting in enhanced corrosion resistance and durability. Wood goes on to explain that environmental regulations compel the coatings industry to develop coatings with lower environmental impacts and with better health and safety in mind. Wood affirms, "Rohm and Haas is committed to developing products that are ahead of the regulatory curve and products that anticipate stricter regulations."
