ASTM Workshop to address additives in biomedical polymers.

Workshop aims to elicit discussion on benefits, potential hazards, testing, regulatory considerations, and opportunities for standard activities related to intentionally incorporated additives in biomedical polymers. Some topics for abstract submissions include: colorants; radiopacifiers;  elutables, extractables, and leachables; radiolabels; nanomaterials; and failure mechanisms.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., —Presentations are invited for a workshop on the Use of Additives in Biomedical Polymers to be held May 6, 2014, at the Sheraton Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the committee.

This workshop is intended to elicit discussion on the benefits, potential hazards, testing, regulatory considerations and opportunities for standard activities related to intentionally incorporated additives in biomedical polymers. The topic of antioxidant stabilizers for highly cross-linked UHMWPE will be excluded because of previous workshops dealing with that topic. Topics for abstract submissions include:
• Colorants;
• Radiopacifiers;
• Elutables, extractables and leachables;
• Additives in absorbable polymers;
• Radiolabels;
• Nanomaterials;
• Failure mechanisms;
• Regulatory requirements on additives; and
• Analytical testing.
