ASTM International Invites Presentations for Workshop on the Use of Additives in Biomedical Polymers

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., —Presentations are invited for a workshop on the Use of Additives in Biomedical Polymers to be held May 6, 2014, at the Sheraton Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the committee.

This workshop is intended to elicit discussion on the benefits, potential hazards, testing, regulatory considerations and opportunities for standard activities related to intentionally incorporated additives in biomedical polymers. The topic of antioxidant stabilizers for highly cross-linked UHMWPE will be excluded because of previous workshops dealing with that topic. Topics for abstract submissions include:

• Colorants;

• Radiopacifiers;

• Elutables, extractables and leachables;

• Additives in absorbable polymers;

• Radiolabels;

• Nanomaterials;

• Failure mechanisms;

• Regulatory requirements on additives; and

• Analytical testing.

To participate in the workshop, presenters must submit a 250-300 word preliminary abstract by March 1, 2014, to Jon Moseley at jon.moseley@wmt.com. Visit www.astm.org/F04Wrkshp5-2014 for the full list of topics.
