New 360 Series Stearns(R) Brake Designed for Crane Duty

MILWAUKEE--April 10, 2002. .The Stearns Division of Rexnord Corporation has introduced a new armature-actuated electric disc brake designed for use on portal cranes and similar applications. The Stearns 360 Series AAB brake is magnet-body mounted and designed for ease of maintenance. Many available options help make it especially well-suited for crane-duty applications.

The new 360 Series brake is available in four sizes, with static torque ratings of 60, 110, 180 and 300 lb-ft. NEMA frame sizes 182TC through 444/445TC are offered, as well as IEC frames 132C-160C an 132-225D. Among the brake's key features are an IP56 enclosure, universal mounting, internal-maintained manual release, and a modular brake assembly that can be installed and removed without having to readjust air gaps.

To ensure ease of maintenance, the magnet-body mounting allows easy access to the friction disc. Inspection ports in the housing make it easy to check the brake's air gap without removing the brake housing. The conduit box is part of the mounting plate, so the wiring is not disturbed if the brake housing is removed.

Options include a 115, 230 or 460 Vac space heater, external manual release, brake release indicator, AC rectifier, tachometer/encoder, and wear indicator.

The AAB brake design is direct-acting, with only two moving parts. In operation, when electrical power is applied, the armature is pulled by the electromagnetic force in the magnetic body assembly, which overcomes spring action. This allows the friction disc to rotate freely. When electrical power is interrupted, the electromagnetic force is removed, and the pressure spring mechanically forces the armature plate to clamp the friction disc between itself and the pressure plate. This develops the torque needed to stop or hold the load.

Further information on the new armature-actuated Stearns 360 Series Portal Crane Brakes is available from Stearns Division, Rexnord Corporation, 5150 International Drive. Cudahy, WI 53110. Telephone 414-271-1100 or visit the Rexnord website at www.rexnord.com.
