Wolfson Expands Integrated Power Management and Audio IC Family

Edinburgh, UK, December 18th 2008 - Wolfson Microelectronics (LSE: WLF.L) today launched two additional products utilizing its Smart Power technology. The WM8351 and WM8352 integrated high fidelity audio CODEC and power management ICs complement Wolfson's proven WM8350 integrated power management device launched in October 2007. Between the three products Wolfson is offering system designers support for a wider range of multimedia processors and usage scenarios.

Both the WM8351 and WM8352 are highly integrated ICs that deliver power management and audio without compromise. Compared to using separate CODEC and power management chips, which typically require two or more additional components, the WM8351 and WM8352 provide savings of up to 25% off the bill of materials cost and 50% on the board footprint.

Designers of portable consumer electronics, such as portable audio and navigation devices, can now choose from a range of products to suit their needs. The simplified WM8351 is targeted at lower cost platforms that do not require all of the WM8350's functionality. The WM8532 has the same capabilities as the WM8350 but offers extra configuration settings to support high-end designs.

"Wolfson is focused on improving the end user experience and the WM8351 and WM8352 continue to deliver on this goal," said Mike Hickey, CEO of Wolfson. "With these new devices the end customer is guaranteed uncompromised high performance audio and power management."

The WM8350, WM8351 and WM8352 support the majority of application processors. In addition to the combined 9 pre-set start up and configuration settings, the devices have a mode where complete control is available.

The WM8351 is aimed at lower cost solutions that do not require all of the functionality on the WM8350 or WM8352. The WM8351 incorporates 4 DC-DC converters (3 buck and 1 boost converter) versus the 6 DC-DC converters (4 buck and 2 boost converters) found in the WM8350 and WM8352.

The WM8351 and WM8352 feature a high performance, high fidelity stereo CODEC with advanced mixing capability, delivering an excellent 98 dB SNR performance. They include six analog inputs, two stereo analog outputs and two mono line outputs, and can drive headphones directly. Programmable on-chip amplifiers allow direct connection of headphones and microphones with a minimum of external components. An on-chip battery charger supports both trickle charging and fast (constant current, constant voltage) charging of single-cell lithium batteries. The charge current, termination voltage, and charger time out are programmable to suit different types of batteries.

Wolfson is working with the key application processor vendors to develop reference designs using the WM8351 and WM8352 - delivering proven power management solutions to the end customer.

Pricing and Availability:
The WM8351 and WM8352 are available for sampling now and available in volume in Q1 2009. The WM8351 is priced at $4.63 per unit in volumes of 1,000 and the WM8352 is priced as $5.41 per unit in volumes of 1,000.
