SCM Microsystems Introduces NFC-Enabled Multiprotocol Contactless Reader

Support for ISO 14443 A&B, MIFARE, FeliCa and NFC enables infrastructure for contactless payment, transportation, eGovernment and access control

ISMANING, Germany, Nov. 18 -- SCM Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCMM)(NASDAQ:Prime)(NASDAQ:Standard:)(NASDAQ:SMY), a leading provider of solutions that open the Digital World, today introduced its latest contactless reader device. The SCL010 is a 13.56 MHz multiprotocol reader that supports the global expansion in contactless schemes for payment, eGovernment, secure transactions and access control.

SCM's SCL010 is a high performance, fully interoperable and multiprotocol reader that supports all major 13.56 MHz contactless technologies, including ISO 14443 type A&B, FeliCa®, MIFARE(TM) and NFC. This multiprotocol feature set allows the SCL010 to communicate with all major contactless user credentials (e.g., smart cards, dongles, NFC-enabled mobile phones and other tokens) to enable a wide range of contactless applications, including ID schemes, electronic purchase, ticketing, loyalty programs, public transportation and contactless PKI applications.

With Japan currently leading the world in the use of innovative contactless applications, SCM has ensured that its new reader is compliant with all requirements for the Japanese market. The SCL010 reader is designed to be fully interoperable with Japanese Juki Cards, which serve as identification for all Japanese residents. SCL010 also has all necessary features and certifications to support FeliCa and other important Japanese technology standards. There are 300 million FeliCa cards and several million Juki Cards in use in Japan today, and millions of additional contactless credentials are expected in the form of new social security cards as well as mobile phones and other personal devices. More than 10,000 SCL010 readers have already been shipped to an SCM customer in Japan.

"The SCL010 reader represents another important step for SCM on our way to being a leading infrastructure supplier to the globally emerging market for contactless credentials. Supporting several contactless protocols in one device makes it universally useful and solves the problems of compatibility and conflicting standards that have so far plagued the contactless environment. Additionally, the ability to perform firmware upgrades in the field protects customer investments by providing the necessary flexibility to adapt to emerging standards and protocol requirements," said Felix Marx, chief executive officer of SCM Microsystems. "In many ways Japan is leading the rest of the world in the development, adoption and deployment of contactless technology to handle everyday activities such as payments, ticketing and secure access. SCM is committed to providing the solutions that innovators such as NTT, Sony and others need to implement contactless programs for government, commerce and the enterprise."

Availability

A complete software development kit (SDK) for the SCL010 based on PC/SC is available to help application developers. To enable maximum application reusability, SCM provides middleware that sits above the PC/SC API and eases portability of applications and abstraction of smart card-related details related to specific applications.

The SCL010 is immediately available worldwide. Further information can be obtained by contacting your local SCM sales representative or sending an email to sales@scmmicro.com.
