Laird Technologies' WLM400 Streaming Wireless LAN Module Offers New Levels of Throughput for Embedded Designers

New ground-breaking 802.11b/g module delivers streaming performance
with zero host processing requirements.

St. Louis, Missouri, USA - November 11, 2008 - Laird Technologies, Inc., a global leader in the design and manufacture of customized, performance-critical components and systems for wireless and other advanced electronics, today announced a new 802.11 wireless module aimed at streaming video and high data rate applications.

Laird Technologies' WLM400 802.11b/g Wireless LAN module brings a new level of performance to embedded designers wanting to take advantage of the high data rates available from Wi-Fi networks. It overcomes the compromises of other modules, where a choice has to be made between data throughput that requires a host processor or the simplicity of a module with embedded drivers and TCP/IP stack but invariably have a low throughput. The WLM400 solves this dilemma and offers the best of both worlds by utilizing a powerful ARM9 application processor to provide a streaming channel that can deliver in excess of 15Mbps real data throughput with a 54Mbps 802.11g link with minimal power consumption. It is the only embedded wireless LAN module that provides this level of performance, making it an ideal choice for all wireless video streaming applications.

Key features of the WLM400 include actual streaming data rates in excess of 15Mbps, full embedded TCP/IP stack, support for 802.11b/g specification, and low power operation. Additionally, the modules supports antenna diversity, excellent range, an ARM9 application processor, UART control port, as well as SPI, I2C, GPIO, and ADC ports. Extensive development tools and technical support are also available.

"Embedded 802.11 modules with integrated drivers and stacks have long been lacking in terms of data throughput," said Nick Hunn, Advanced Technology Director of Laird Technologies. "This new module delivers outstanding performance of wireless networking to applications that do not have the host processing capacity to perform the heavyweight driver and TCP/IP activity for themselves. It is ideal for many industries that want to move from a wired to wireless connection, but have previously been unable to support the additional processing load."

Laird Technologies - Streaming Wireless LAN Module

This is the latest new product in Laird Technologies' wide range of high-performance wireless modules designed to make wireless integration simple. In addition to ultimate throughput, the WLM400 is optimized for low power consumption and ease of use. Based on the Marvell 8686 Wi-Fi chipset, the additional application processor includes a robust, industrial grade TCP/IP stack and driver implementation that can save designers months of embedded firmware development. It is ideal for streaming wireless applications, whether as infrastructure connections or a video cable replacement in ad-hoc mode.
