Middleware supports real-time communication and integration.
November 7, 2008 -
Suited for avionics and unmanned aircraft systems, RTI Data Distribution Service, Safety-Critical Edition meets safety certification standards such as DO-178B. Based on OMG data distribution service for real-time systems standard, middleware provides message bus for integrating distributed components of avionics systems, such as control systems, sensors, actuators, and displays. It also supports standard DDS interoperability protocol and real-time publish-subscribe protocol.

RTI Launches First DO-178B Safety-Certifiable Messaging Middleware Based on DDS Standard
Supports real-time communication and integration requirements for avionics and unmanned aircraft systems
BOSTON, MA, Embedded Systems Conference-October 28, 2008-Real-Time Innovations (RTI), The Real-Time Middleware Experts, today announced that it has released the first version of RTI Data Distribution Service, Safety-Critical Edition. This new, small-footprint version of RTI's real-time messaging middleware is designed to meet safety certification standards such as DO-178B. Safety-Critical Edition was initially developed for use in satellite applications by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). However, Safety-Critical Edition is also ideal for communication within and between avionics systems and Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) ground-control stations.
Based on the Object Management Group (OMG) Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) standard, Safety-Critical Edition provides a high-performance message bus for integrating distributed components of avionics systems, such as control systems, sensors, actuators and displays. Its loosely coupled integration approach significantly reduces long-term software maintenance costs by allowing individual subsystems to be added or upgraded without impacting existing software.
Safety-Critical Edition supports the standard DDS interoperability protocol and the Real-Time Publish-Subscribe Protocol (RTPS). Applications developed using Safety-Critical Edition can seamlessly communicate with other systems developed using RTPS-compliant DDS middleware. This allows military UASs to be easily integrated with net-centric combat systems, where DDS is widely used.
Safety-Critical Edition provides the core features that safety-critical systems need to perform high-performance data communication while minimizing code size, leading to a library size of approximately 130KB. This simplifies the task of meeting stringent safety and security certification requirements such as RTCA/DO-178B and Common Criteria for IT Security ISO/IEC 15408.
"RTI Data Distribution Service, Safety-Critical Edition provides a new level of capability for developers of distributed high-assurance systems," said Bob Kindel, vice president of Engineering Services at RTI. "These applications are not supported by traditional enterprise messaging and integration middleware. In addition, Safety-Critical Edition can be integrated with existing RTI Data Distribution Service middleware in a transparent manner, allowing developers to satisfy each application's capability, resource and assurance requirements."
Pricing & Availability
RTI Data Distribution Service, Safety-Critical Edition will initially support Linux, Solaris, VxWorks 5.5 and VxWorks 6.4 operating systems. It is designed to be portable to other RTOS environments such as LynxOS and INTEGRITY operating systems.
About RTI Data Distribution Service
RTI Data Distribution Service complies with the OMG DDS standard. RTI Data Distribution Service is a high-performance messaging and data-caching solution for the development and integration of applications that require low latency, high throughput, high scalability, deterministic responses and minimal consumption of network, processor and memory resources. RTI Data Distribution Service meets the unique and demanding requirements of mission-critical real-time systems, including the ability to run in dynamic and autonomous environments and over unreliable or low-bandwidth networks such as wireless and satellite links.
