Modular Magnetic Encoder features compact design.

September 16, 2008 - Measuring 0.68 in. long with 1.6 in. dia and 1.28 or 1.81 in. mounting patterns, M15 Modular Magnetic Encoder performs in dirty environments where debris interference is high. Available in resolutions ranging from 100-2,048 lines with 4/6/8/12 pole commutation and reference pulse options, it is based on MPS 160 encoder ASIC, which combines direction-sensing Hall Effect encoder and integrated index pulse with high-resolution multiplying circuit to produce quadrature output signals.

Timken Introduces Compact Magnetic Encoder for Challenging Environments

Modular M15 more reliable and less complex than optical encoders

CANTON, Ohio - Aug. 28, 2008 - The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR) is introducing a new M15 Modular Magnetic Encoder that provides more reliable feedback than optical encoders to keep motors and factory-automated equipment running longer, even in harsh environments.

Encoders are used to provide data on the speed and positioning of rotating motor shafts and equipment. Applications for encoders are found throughout many industries and the M15 encoder is specifically designed to perform in dirty environments where conventional optical encoders frequently fail due to debris interference.

Unlike optical encoders which require precise alignment to operate, the M15 is easier to install because it uses magnetic technology that reduces complexity and also accommodates motor shaft tolerances. This technology eliminates interference from machine vibrations, delivering a longer operating life and more reliable performance.

"Combining its proven sensor technology with a comprehensive understanding of motion control, Timken has developed the M15 modular encoder to deliver exceptional value with a reliable integrated design that is less complex and time consuming to install," said Greg Vanbuskirk, business development manager, motion sensors. "The unique use of magnetic circuitry in a compact modular unit also makes the M15 encoder a more economical option that is less prone to failure than the conventional optical encoder."

Potential applications include stepper-motor positioning and anti-stall feedback, DC brush-type motor positioning, and brushless DC and servo motor control.
As well as being functional in more environments, the M15 is also designed to accommodate a wide range of motor shaft end play. The M15 encoder is also available in a wider variety of resolutions that range from 100 lines up to 2048 lines with 4/6/8/12 pole commutation and reference pulse options.

The core operating module of the M15 Modular Magnetic Encoder is the proven Timken MPS 160 encoder ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit). The MPS 160 combines a direction-sensing Hall Effect encoder and integrated index pulse with a high-resolution multiplying circuit to produce the same quadrature output signals as an optical encoder, and the encoder ASIC's patented circuitry provides protection from errant magnetic fields.

The compact Timken encoder, with a low profile of 0.68 inches (17 millimeters), is approximately 1.6 inches (41 millimeters) in diameter and uses industry standard mounting patterns of 1.28 or 1.81 inches (32.5 or 46 millimeters). The M15 fits numerous shaft sizes making it a convenient drop-in replacement for more complex optical designs.

Timken motion control solutions include sensor technologies that help improve performance, extend equipment life and provide precise control in automotive, off-highway and industrial applications. With a large product offering including sensor-equipped bearings, condition monitoring and position sensors, Timken continues to meet motion control needs globally.
