ON Semiconductor Releases New Family of 8, 12 and 16 Amp Triacs in an Isolated TO220 Package

Newly redesigned TO220 package offers best-in-class isolation performance, increased reliability and design flexibility for industrial and control applications

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Aug 14, 2008 - ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) a global leader in efficient power semiconductors solutions, announced the expansion of its high performance triac portfolio with the introduction of 12 new triacs with available power ratings of 8 Amps (A), 12 A and 16 A with Gate Trigger Current (Igt) levels of 35 milliamps (mA) and 50 mA. The BTAxxxx series of devices are ideal for industrial and control applications where isolation voltage is critical and safety is a primary concern.

"The new BTAxxx triacs from ON Semiconductor represent the company's entry into the isolated package market for thyristors, building on its long history in supplying SCR's and triacs," said Gary Straker, ON Semiconductor director of the Protection and Control business unit. "Every designer is under pressure to improve the safety and efficiency of his or her design. The new triacs and SCR's from ON Semiconductor can play an important role in any system where safe and efficient AC power switching is required. They add additional safety that comes from the very high isolation voltage of a fully internally isolated package and are a compliment to our recently released BTBxxx series of triacs".

Both the BTAxxx and non isolated equivalent, BTBxxx series, utilize the latest silicon and package designs that optimized die area and package construction improving device performance resulting in the release of high performance devices at a competitive price.

The new BTA08-600BW3G, BTA08-800BW3G, BTA12-600BW3G, BTA12-800BW3G, BTA16-600BW3G, BTA16-800BW3G, BTA08-600CW3G, BTA08-800CW3G, BTA12-600CW3G, BTA12-800CW3G, BTA16-600CW3G, BTA16-800CW3G triacs devices from ON Semiconductor provide best-in-class isolation performance, high Igt for snubberless designs, excellent dV/dt for improved noise immunity and three quadrant operation. Soon to be released product line expansion will include sensitive gate and four quadrant operation.

Key Features:

Blocking voltage to 800 Volts (V)
On-state current ratings to 16 A RMS
High immunity to dV/dt up to 2000 V/us
Standard and snubberless
Logic level
Balance gate trigger current in 3 and 4 quadrants

Packaging and Pricing:

These devices are available in an Isolated TO220 package. The BTAxxx are budgetary priced at $0.45 USD for the 8 A version, 12 A for the $0.47 and $0.54 USD for the 16 A version per unit for 1,000 unit quantities.
