Surge Protector meets UL 1449 3rd Edition safety standard.

September 4, 2008 - Including Strikesorb-40 and Strikesorb-80 which are rated at 140 and 200 kA, respectively, Strikesorb SPD modules provide uninterrupted protection from surge currents regardless of power conditions. With flat slope resistance characteristic, units are designed to be installed in locations where risk of direct lightning strike is high such as oil, gas, and petrochemical equipment applications. Modules are comprised of single large distribution-grade MOV disc, either 40 or 80 mm in dia.

Strikesorb SPD Modules Protect Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Operations and Meet UL 1449 3rd Edition Safety Standard

Fuseless surge protection device outperforms traditional fused SPD devices.

Liberty Lake, WA (August 27, 2008) - Raycap Inc., a leader in transient voltage surge suppression technology, has developed a single-MOV module with a high surge handling capability that absorbs and dissipates the excess energy from lightning strikes and power surges in a completely safe manner, making it ideal for installation in oil, gas and petrochemical equipment applications. Designated Strikesorb, the 40mm and 80mm SPD modules met the UL 1449 3rd Edition Safety Standard's intermediate current abnormal overvoltage test by successfully conducting current at 1000A for seven hours, without disconnecting from the circuit. Featuring a flat slope resistance characteristic, the Strikesorb SPD modules received a nominal discharge current test (In) rating of 20kA, the highest possible, without the use of internal fuses.

The Strikesorb SPD modules have been designated as Type-4 devices deemed suitable for use in Type-2 applications by UL. Unlike many discrete components, the Strikesorb modules passed the full extent of UL 3rd Edition testing program.

Strikesorb modules provide complete and uninterrupted protection through their unique ability to sustain multiple and successive surges without requiring maintenance, even under harsh environmental or poor power quality conditions.

"Our Strikesorb modules never compromise the safety of the equipment by taking itself off-line, self destructing, or going into thermal runaway, which is a significant concern when protecting oil, gas, and petrochemical equipment, such as excavation equipment and oil rigs," said Jeff Gibbons, Raycap VP Sales and Marketing. "Built to perform consistently across a wide range of transient current levels, the Strikesorb modules are the only SPDs to successfully conduct current for the full seven hours at 1000A. This ensures that our Strikesorb SPD will not create fire or shock hazards when subjected to prolonged and abnormal AC overvoltage conditions that cause them to conduct continuous overcurrent values. It is this abnormal current conduction that causes many conventional SPD devices to overheat and ignite fires."

Designed to be installed in locations where the risk of direct lightning strikes is high or where there is a history of frequent surge-related equipment failures, Strikesorb is the industry's only SPD module that provides uninterrupted protection from surge currents of up to 200kA regardless of the power conditions.

Strikesorb's modules are comprised of a single large distribution-grade metal oxide varistor (MOV) disc, either 40mm or 80mm in diameter, and encased in an environmentally sealed aluminum housing. Strikesorb modules provide uniform distribution of the surge current over the total area of the MOV protection element, resulting in high-energy handling capability combined with ultra-low let-through voltage to the protected equipment and long maintenance-free service lifetime.

Unlike conventional SPD systems that employ parallel arrays of smaller components (MOVs or SADs) with 90° angled lead wires to each device, Strikesorb's patented monolithic design provides a straight electrical path directly to the suppression element, providing extremely low contact resistance and a superior heat dissipation mechanism to inhibit aging of the MOV. The Strikesorb module exhibits low clamping voltage and can be directly connected on the power bus bars inside the cabinet of the equipment after the main circuit breaker or fuse.

The Strikesorb module has been tested successfully to 10/350µs direct lightning waveforms up to 25kA as specified by IEC 61643-1. Strikesorb modules are offered in two variations, Strikesorb-40 rated at 140kA (8/20µs) and Strikesorb-80 rated at 200kA (8/20µs) according to NEMA LS-1, and both types are available in ratings to fit a variety of applications, including operating voltages up to 690V.

Both the 40mm and 80mm modules can also be integrated inside larger systems or within Raycap's Rayvoss' stand alone SPD system. The Rayvoss system can utilize the Strikesorb suppression module in a variety of configurations and operating voltages including single-phase, split-phase, three-phase wye and three-phase delta configurations.
