Hydraulic Pump Control helps reduce power consumption.

August 1, 2008 - Using pump-modeling software which is based on feed-forward torque control algorithms, UNiGY® PhD can continually sense demand of hydraulic power, energizing the pump only as required by the application. System also employs current signature analysis to sense common environmental hazards associated with hydraulic systems. It can be retrofitted into existing systems and incorporated into new installations to monitor/control high pressure positive displacement pumps.

UNiGY® Pump Control Technology Improves Energy Efficiency for Industrial Pump Users

Smart Drive Decreases Demand and Reactive Power Charges for Industrial Market Users

Queensbury, N.Y. - Kadant AES, a division of Kadant Inc. (NYSE:KAI) and a global provider of fluid process solutions, offers the UNiGY® PhD (Pump-modeling hydraulic Drive(TM) technology) to improve energy efficiency for hydraulic pump systems by providing hydraulic power on demand. The intelligent design reduces power consumption by up to 60 percent to assist in alleviating energy consumption in the industrial sector.

The exclusive and patented UNiGY pump-control technology employs intelligent pump-control software to continually sense demand, energizing the pump only as required by the application. In doing so, the pump produces the precise flow rates and pressures demanded by the process, and no more, thereby reducing the need for oil cooling, lowering energy consumption, wasted heat generation, and noise.

By matching hydraulic power output to demand, UNiGY technology consistently operates the hydraulic system at almost "Unity" power factor. Additionally, the system utilizes pumps and motors that operate at a high efficiency at all flows and pressures, thereby significantly reducing the peak electrical demand, total energy consumption, and the demand and reactive power charges levied by most utilities for industrial sector users.

The software is based on feed-forward torque control algorithms that slow or stop the pump when reduced flow is required and which eliminate pressure spikes and ripples, resulting in fewer hose bursts, leaks, and unscheduled plant outages. Improving plant safety, the system also employs current signature analysis to sense common environmental hazards associated with hydraulic systems, such as leaks that lead to fires.

The UNiGY pump-control technology can be retrofitted into existing systems and incorporated into new installations. UNiGY technology reduces hydraulic system complexity by eliminating the need for pressure compensated pumps, as well as oil cooling circuits, dump valves, servo valves, and associated amplifier cards.

About UNiGY Pump-Control Technology

UNiGY pump-control technology is a patented technology that utilizes pump-modeling software in closed-loop Flux Vector Drives for hydraulic power generation and to monitor and control high pressure positive displacement pumps. Distinct from VFD technology, UNiGY PhD (Pump-modeling hydraulic Drive) technology provides precise control of both pressure and flow. Developed under a grant provided by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), UNiGY technology reduces energy use, simplifies system design and provides valuable pump and systems diagnostics which significantly reduces maintenance and downtime expense.
