Oakwood Village, Ohio, June 25, 2008 - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the introduction of the Thermo Scientific Series 12, the next generation of contamination monitoring systems for the nuclear power industry, offering faster scanning, networking capabilities and enhanced reporting.
The 12 Series includes the Thermo Scientific SAM12 small article monitor and the Thermo Scientific PM12 personnel gamma portal monitor, both employing the QuickScan algorithm that significantly reduces the counting time when articles or personnel clearly exceed, or are well below, the alarm level. QuickScan detects whether an item is clean or contaminated within ten seconds.
The SAM12, building on the rugged capabilities of the SAM11 to monitor articles for gamma emitting radionuclides, readily measures down to clearance levels less than 5000 dpm (83 Bq) but adds sophisticated new electronics allowing dynamic discrimination between natural and man-made radiation. The monitor measures fixed, smeared, internal and external gamma contamination simultaneously. Where 60Co contamination is present, the SAM12 can monitor specifically for this radionuclide using cobalt coincidence monitoring (CCM), a technique particularly insensitive to fluctuating gamma background radiation even from a source of 60Co.
According to customer Matthew Lunn of British Energy, "The new menus and screens available for equipment set up, calibration and diagnostics were very intuitive. The user-interface software was easy to use and a significant improvement over the SAM11. The touch screen panel was very useful for diagnostics by technicians and health physicists."

The PM12, occupying the same footprint as its predecessor, the PM7, but with more internal room, measures down to 370 Bq(10 nCi) of 60Co and has the ability, like the SAM12, to check for changing background conditions during the measurement. All results are logged to an internal database. The personnel monitor is PC-controlled using an embedded Windows XP operating system and comes with an optional touch-screen LCD to calibrate and configure the portal, as well as retrieve measurement and calibration information from the database. Daily monitoring of personnel is achieved through features such as cameras and bar code scanners. Data uploading or downloading can be easily performed through a USB connection. The PM12 database, as with the SAM12, is also accessible via the Thermo Scientific ViewPoint(TM) remote monitoring software. "We are excited to add the PM12 to our product portfolio," Mr. Grose said.
