Motorola Introduces Out-of-the-Box Imaging Solution for Reading U.S. Driver Licenses

VDC Study Confirms Motorola's Global Leadership Position in Growing Imaging Market

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., June 25 - The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today introduced the Symbol DS6708-DL digital imager scanner - the industry's only complete solution designed to read and parse the data embedded in the PDF-417 barcode on U.S. driver licenses. The new DS6708-DL builds on Motorola's legacy of innovation with a unique and optimized imaging solution to help enterprise mobility (http://business.motorola.com/us/enterprise/index.html) customers improve the end-user experience and increase worker productivity.

Motorola also announced it was named the global market share leader of handheld two-dimensional (2D) bar code imagers by technology market research and strategy firm, Venture Development Corp. (VDC) for the second year in a row. According to a study conducted by VDC (1), Motorola captured an industry leading 29.2 percent of worldwide revenue for handheld 2D bar code imagers during 2007.

"Motorola customers are realizing competitive advantages and increased employee productivity and efficiencies through the use of the automatic identification data capture (AIDC) industry's broadest portfolio of handheld bar code scanners," (http://www.motorola.com/business/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=f02475489c075110VgnVCM 1000008406b00aRCRD) said Bob Sanders, vice president and general manager of Advanced Data Capture, Motorola Enterprise Mobility business. "As the pioneer in the bar code scanning market and market-leader in both handheld laser scanning and imaging, Motorola is committed to developing next-generation technologies, like the DS6708-DL, that customers demand to protect their IT investments and better serve the mobile workforce."

The Symbol DS6708-DL combines all the features of Motorola's standard Symbol DS6708 imager, including omni-directional 1D/2D bar code scanning and embedded and server-based parsing agents that enable users to read the PDF-417 bar code on U.S. driver licenses and decipher the raw data strings. This information is transformed into intelligent data which can be used for a multitude of applications including auto-population of a credit or loyalty card form, age verification or returns monitoring.

With the ability to read driver licenses, retail customers can increase efficiencies, eliminate manual keying errors and ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations regarding the sales of such items as tobacco and alcohol. Eliminating additional software and licensing fees, the DS6708-DL requires minimal start-up effort making it well-suited for retailers of all sizes. In addition, the Symbol DS6708-DL from Motorola includes yearly updates for new driver's license format releases to increase investment protection.

To help customers maintain peak performance, Motorola recommends Service from the Start (http://www.motorola.com/business/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=26a24facb24c9110VgnVCM 1000008406b00aRCRD) Advance Exchange Support for the DS6708-DL. This multi- year agreement provides the next-business-day device replacement customers need to keep business running smoothly and productively. Built-in Comprehensive Coverage also helps to protect customers from the unexpected. This enhanced level of coverage reduces unforeseen repair expenses while providing investment protection and service peace of mind.

"Imaging growth, in particular 2D, continues to be driven by performance improvements and, alignment with end user demand to capture more information throughout the value chain, and its capacity to support applications beyond scanning such as image and signature capture," said Kevin Permenter, VDC Analyst. "Motorola has been able to maintain its leading position in 2D handheld bar code imaging due to the firm's continued success in core imaging markets such as industrial/manufacturing, retail, and healthcare."
