IXYS Introduces New 4.5kV Asymmetric GTO Thyristor

Milpitas, CA. - March 27, 2008 - IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ: IXYS) announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, Westcode Semiconductors Limited, has launched a new addition to its Rectifier diode range. The new device forms an extension to the revolutionary Wespack(TM) housing, offering the maximum rating in the smallest footprint. The rectifier diode has a maximum voltage rating of 3.5kV with an RMS current of 8678A and is encapsulated in a 68mm pole face hermetic pressure contact package.

The new device introduces for the first time the Wespack style housing for higher voltages. The new package has an industry standard 100mm overall diameter, but with a larger 68mm diameter contact area. When compared to conventionally packaged devices of the same overall dimensions the new device presents 23% more current rating in the same volume. The device is offered in two voltage grades: W4713HM300 with V(RRM)=3000V and W4713HM350 with V(RRM)=3500V.

The new diode is suited to all rectifier applications within the specified ratings of the device. Typical applications would be track-side power supplies, chemical rectifiers for; aluminium plants, desalination etc, excitation equipment and general high power front end rectifies.

"The compatibility with conventionally packaged rectifiers offers the opportunity of upgrading the current rating of existing rectifier circuits, without the need to change the mechanics of the cooling system, thus offering an economic and environmentally friendly solution for rectifier circuit upgrade and refurbishment," commented Frank Wakeman, Marketing & Technical Support Manager. "Energy efficiency and conservation is of importance to IXYS and its subsidiaries, and we strive to offer a diverse range of products that address the worldwide need for effective power conversion and increasing electrical efficiencies at every opportunity. This device family, with its megawatts of power rectification capability in a smaller and lighter weight package offers unprecedented energy and material cost savings to our customers."
