Mazak's New VCN 700D-II Responds to Market Demand

(FLORENCE, KENTUCKY) - Responding to market demand for a larger NEXUS Vertical Machining Center with a 50-taper spindle, Mazak Corporation introduces the Kentucky-built VERTICAL CENTER NEXUS 700D-II.

High productivity is achieved with the VCN 700D-II's 8,000 rpm, 40-Hp, integrated spindle motor, which achieves 0-8,000 rpm in 1.41 seconds, generates 222.7 ft.-lbs. of torque, and features a rapid traverse rate of 1,182 IPM (30 mm/m). Contributing to the machine's flexibility is its large, 68.5-x-27.7-inch (1,740-x-700-mm) machine table with a maximum part weight of 4,409 pounds (2,000 kg). The table capacity, in conjunction with axis strokes of 60.2 inches (1,530 mm) in X, 27.5-inches (700 mm) in Y, and 25.5 inches (650 mm) in Z, expands the machining envelope and improves the heavy-duty cutting capability of steel by approximately 50 percent over the previous model. The machine also features a chip-to-chip tool change time of 4.4 seconds with a 30-tool magazine/ATC servomotor.

The VCN 700D-II's accuracy is enhanced by several intelligent machining functions. First is the Intelligent Thermal Shield (ITS), which automatically maintains temperature stability for high-precision machining. Even if the temperature in a factory changes, the ITS compensates based on data obtained during tests performed in a temperature-controlled room. As a result, machine heat displacement is less than 0.0003" with a room temperature change of 14.48 degrees F (8 degrees C).

Other countermeasures for heat displacement include locating internal sources of heat effectively to minimize impact on machining accuracy and a ball screw core cooling system for the X-, Y-, and Z-axes.

Machine vibration caused by axis-movement acceleration/deceleration can considerably affect machining accuracy and machining time. The VCN 700D-II has Active Vibration Control, which reduces vibration for high-accuracy positioning in all axes and reduces machining time. Since this function lessens tool noise vibration, high-quality machined surface finishes result and excessive tool nose wear is eliminated.

Accuracy is further enhanced by extremely rigid linear roller guides, quadrant spike compensation and the integral spindle motor, which minimizes vibration and promotes high quality.

The VCN 700D-II was designed with reliability, and ease of maintenance and operation in mind. It has 10 percent fewer parts than the previous model, which results in improved reliability. Table access is 13 inches (330 mm) from the front and the front door is 70.8 inches (1,800 mm) wide for ease of setup and loading. Lubrication inlets, air valves and other units are centrally located for convenient machine maintenance.

For the cutting of difficult-to-machine materials, a high-torque spindle specification is available for the VCN 700D-II. Other options include a rear-discharge chip conveyor and a two-pallet changer.

The VCN 700D-II's intelligent functions are part of the sixth generation Mazatrol CNC, the Matrix. Other advanced functions include the Intelligent Safety Shield (ISS) and Virtual Machining. ISS works when an operator manually moves the machine axes for setup, tool measurement by the Tool Eye or changing inserts. Mazatrol shows a synchronized 3D model on the CNC display to check machine interference. If any machine interference is likely to occur, the machine motion immediately stops.

With Virtual Machining, machine programs can be made with minimum errors and time required for test cuts thanks to realistic machine 3D simulation displays that can be used for convenient program confirmation and checking for any machine interference.

The new Mazak Voice Advisor provides verbal support for machine set up and safe condition confirmation.

Mazak's new VERTICALCENTER NEXUS 700D-II Vertical Machining Center responds to market demand for a larger NEXUS Vertical Machining Center with a 50-taper spindle. It also is equipped with many intelligent functions.
