New PowerCommand iWatch wireless system simplifies remote generator set monitoring.
Minneapolis, MN - The new PowerCommand® iWatch(TM) wireless monitoring system from Cummins Power Generation Inc. provides a simple and inexpensive method of remotely monitoring generator sets via cellular or satellite networks. With no need to install complicated computer software at the customer's site, the PowerCommand iWatch wireless monitoring system allows customers to access operational data using any personal computer and Internet browser, or they can receive e-mails or cellular text messages on alarm conditions.
"Now, customers can start, stop or check the status of their on-site power systems anywhere they have an Internet connection, or get alarm notifications anywhere their cell phone or pager works," says Rich Scroggins, manager of networks, switchgear and ATS controls, Cummins Power Generation. "Wireless remote monitoring of standby, rental or prime power generator sets not only increases convenience for power system owners, but it significantly improves reliability by providing real-time information and historical data logging."
Using a Modbus or hardwired interface with the generator set and transfer switches, the iWatch wireless remote monitoring system communicates with a Cummins Power Generation hosted web server over a satellite or cellular connection. Remote users can access generator set data over the internet using their standard internet browser. The web server will also send emails or text messages on alarm conditions. In this way, multiple password-protected users can simultaneously monitor generators and be notified of any events without exposing the system to viruses or hackers. The system is also available with optional GPS for use with mobile or rental generators.
"Being able to confirm weekly generator set testing on standby power systems ensures that any starting or operating problems will be quickly detected and corrected," says Scroggins. "For on-site power systems that provide continuous power, real-time remote monitoring can help improve performance and allow uses to react to alarm conditions in a timely manner. These factors will lead to higher power system reliability and greater peace of mind."
