Emerson Introduces Universal Control Unit for Use with 4-20 mA or HART® Compatible Transmitters

Rosemount 3490 Series Universal Control Units are compact and easy to use, providing configuration, display, calculations, logging and control outputs

The Rosemount 3490 Series Universal Control Unit from Emerson is compact and easy to use.

AUSTIN, TEXAS (October 9, 2007)- Emerson Process Management introduces the Rosemount 3490 Series of Universal Control Units, designed to provide comprehensive control functionality when used with any 4-20mA or HART compatible transmitter. The 3490 Series Control Units configure transmitters and provide display, calculations, logging and control outputs. The series comprises the 3491 Standard Control Unit, 3492 Differential and 3493 Logging Control Units.

The 3490 Series is user friendly and has the capability to perform a variety of calculations on the signal received from the transmitter, for example, translating level into volume or flow. All variants feature a multi-function back-lit display and integrated six button keypad. The intuitive menu driven display and wizard-assisted programming makes the unit easy to use without any special training.

Suitable for wall or panel mounting in a non-hazardous area, the control units are 115/230V ac or 24V dc powered and provide an intrinsically safe 24V dc power supply to the transmitter which may be mounted in a hazardous area. The power supply is fully protected and there is no need for any external I.S. barrier.

Rosemount 3490 Series units can be used as a local display for any HART compatible or 4-20mA device. The clear visual display will show the measured value of any of the HART variables of the transmitter together with units and the controller relay status. There are five voltage free SPDT relays for the control of pumps or to trigger alarms in other equipment.

When a Rosemount 3100 Series Ultrasonic Level Transmitter or 3300 Series Guided Wave Radar HART transmitter is connected, the 3490 Series will recognise the transmitter, allow selection of variables to be processed, and allow full access to and programming of the transmitter configuration parameters, eliminating the need for any other HART programming device. When any other HART transmitter is connected the control unit will enable communications and allow programming of the universal and common practice HART commands.

The Rosemount 3491 is the Standard Control Unit, the 3492 Differential model accepts inputs from two transmitters with HART or 4-20 mA analog inputs (one analog-one HART, or two HART at the same time). It can perform a variety of calculations providing a single current output proportional to the answer. The 3493 Logging model has an on-board logging system which can log up to 7000 samples at user definable intervals, for example logging of PV (or any other displayed variable) and totalized flow values in flow measurement applications. All models can be supplied to meet CE, ATEX, IECEx, CSA, or UL certifications for global use.

Rosemount 3490 Series Universal Control Units are part of Emerson's broad range of intelligent, digital field devices that power the PlantWeb® digital plant architecture to improve plant efficiency by 2% and more through delivering asset optimisation, process automation, and management execution.
