Multi-Threaded Optimisation Comes to Greycon

Enhanced D-Opt algorithm helps manufacturers save time and money

LONDON, Dec. 12 - Greycon Ltd., specialists in optimised production planning and scheduling, today announced the availability of multi-threaded optimisation technology as part of its offering. The D-Opt algorithm is now capable of utilising multiple cores in order to speed up the convergence of the algorithm.

D-Opt is a patent-pending production cycle optimisation solution designed specifically for large-scale, complex scheduling optimisation in the manufacturing industry. By adopting the multi-threaded optimisation technology, D-Opt customers can now test, process and execute multiple production cycle related scenarios in parallel, saving time and money. To view the impressive results on a Cost Ratio Evolution graph, please visit http://www.greycon.com/news/NewsDetails.php?Doc=20071212 .

Commenting on the development, one of the two architects, Alfredo Olivera said: "It is the target of any optimisation algorithm, regardless of its complexity or its platform, to deliver optimised results within two minutes. Frankly, the single-threaded D-Opt algorithm was taking longer than that in some cases. On the other hand, twin-core processors are standard nowadays and quad-core processors start at less than $300. So we decided to take advantage of these chips and the results have been very encouraging so far". Alejandro Friss de Kereki, the other architect added: "The ability of the algorithm to converge faster translates into real-world benefits for our customers, because they are able to try more scenarios in the same amount of time. We have seen instances where in the same elapsed time the savings generated amount to many thousands of dollars compared to the single-threaded version".

The new algorithm will be available as a standard upgrade to existing customers and is due to be released in January 2008.
