JDSU Leverages Innovative Chip Design to Deliver Most Powerful Diode Laser Platform

New L4 Series Generates 10W of Power in Compact Package For Industrial, Medical and Dental Applications

MILPITAS, Calif., Dec. 11 -- JDSU (NASDAQ:JDSU) (TSX: JDU) today announced that it has released the most powerful fiber-coupled diode laser solution with its next-generation L4 platform. The new telecom-grade solution leverages an innovative chip design to generate 10 watts (W) of output power. Its packaging takes up less space compared to previous designs, enabling original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to pack more diode lasers into a smaller space within their systems.

The diode lasers are designed for use in a broad range of industrial, medical and dental applications, including fiber laser pumping, material processing, and dental soft tissue surgery.

"With the new L4 platform, JDSU has increased the performance, power and efficiency of our diode lasers, all within a smaller footprint," said Alex Schoenfelder, vice president and general manager of Integrated Photonics at JDSU. "Our customers benefit by getting higher performance diode laser solutions that aren't more expensive than previous offerings, thanks to our high volume manufacturing capabilities."

New features of the L4 platform include:

o Expanded fiber delivery options.
o Highest power available in the industry at 10W with a package that
has the potential for future scalability.
o 100 micron (µm) fiber delivery either at 0.22 numerical aperture
(NA) or 0.15NA. This allows for higher brightness within the fiber,
or the ability of a system to focus laser light in a smaller
diameter for specific applications.
o Smaller, more efficient package.
o Takes up less space compared to previous designs and allows more
units to be packed within a smaller area.
o New electrical format.
o Simplified electrical design removes need for additional parts,
making the diode laser easier to integrate into OEM systems.
o Improved wavelength flexibility.
o Available in a variety of wavelengths in the 910 nanometer (nm) -
980nm range.

JDSU wil display the new platform at booth #1327 during the SPIE Photonics West 2008 event taking place from January 22-24, 2008 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California.
