Eaton Unveils New ePDUs for Power Distribution High-Density Enclosures Environments, Wiring Closets and Technical Office Applications

September 26, 2007

PITTSBURGH ... Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced the availability of new Powerware® Enclosure Power Distribution Units (ePDU(TM)). The broad portfolio of enclosure-based solutions is ideal for data centers across all power densities providing flexible power distribution for mixed information technology (IT) environments including blade servers, network and storage applications.

Eaton is unique in the industry for providing a tiered set of ePDU products along two dimensions - power capacity and functionality. This allows customers to precisely match the appropriate combination of features and power rating needed for each application. Powerware ePDUs also provide advanced metering, monitoring and management capabilities and complement uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) distributing power to up to 45 receptacles per ePDU.

"Data center and IT professionals require an effective way to manage numerous power cords, deliver the required power without compromising valuable rack space and monitor real-time power conditions into critical equipment," said Sriram Ramakrishnan, business unit manager, Eaton's Data Center Solutions Division. "With Powerware ePDUs, we provide a plug-and-play architecture to organize power distribution, simplify cable management and eliminate the need to commission an electrician for routine moves, and adds and changes in the data center."

Traditional power strips are not delivering enough power or flexibility for today's high-density computing environments. Power demands in datacenters easily double or triple during peak periods and requirements typically fluctuate even more with moves, adds or changes in an enclosure. Powerware ePDUs offer features and options to match the unique requirements of each datacenter, from mounting options to remote monitoring to individual control of receptacles.

Additional Powerware ePDU features include:

o Available for single-phase and three-phase applications up to 17 kilowatts (KW), flexible enough for blade server and switchgear applications

o User-selectable combination of NEMA, IEC and hardwired inputs and NEMA and IEC output receptacles

o Enhances power availability by using separate circuit breakers for groups of receptacles (most models) to limit the impact of overload conditions

o Supports remote monitoring and management at the outlet, branch circuit and ePDU level

o Saves valuable rack space with flexible mounting options, including 1U, 0U, wall and floor mounting

"Eaton stands out in the industry for offering a selection of ePDU products that have strength both in power capacity and in functionality. Powerware ePDU provide confidence that the power circuits connected to critical equipment are appropriately loaded and capable of supporting the high availability demands for today's data centers," added Ramakrishnan.
