AMR Research Introduces Manufacturing 2.0

BOSTON, July 17 - Today, AMR Research launched a new framework, Manufacturing 2.0. The concept, which AMR Research created earlier this year, presents a new, more collaborative model for demand-driven manufacturing.

Manufacturers have been plagued with islands of systems and processes that are isolated within sites or departments. Such silos don't allow for easy collaboration across the manufacturing value chain-internal departments like sales, operations, and marketing, as well as partners and customers-as manufacturers strive to make quality products correct the first time and on demand in today's highly competitive marketplace.

To meet such demands, manufacturers need high levels of collaboration to deal with material sourcing, quality, process and product design, and production planning. Enter Manufacturing 2.0, which lets companies collaborate across design, manufacturing, and supply chain functions, internally and across corporate boundaries with suppliers, customers, design partners, and contract manufacturers.

"It's time to break the shackles of ERP and MES application models and let users address the manufacturing systems backlog," said Colin Masson, research director at AMR Research. "They need to capitalize on broad vendor adoption of manufacturing SOA architectures and apply emerging Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 patterns to today's demand-driven manufacturing. In other words, it's time for Manufacturing 2.0."

To create this vision, AMR Research consulted with ERP, automation, and independent manufacturing vendors, as well as dozens of global manufacturers.

Manufacturing 2.0 is a natural extension of AMR Research's heritage. Founded as Advanced Manufacturing Research in 1986, the company has spent the past 21 years helping manufacturers create processes and use technology to grow their businesses. In fact, AMR Research coined the term manufacturing execution system (MES) in 1990 and thereafter played an integral role defining the support technology markets.

Today, AMR Research offers advisory and peer forum products that support manufacturers' quest to become demand-driven and more collaborative, as outlined in Manufacturing 2.0. The recently launched Manufacturing Peer Forum delivers vision and practical advice for manufacturing and operations executives through expert-led discussion.
