FCI First to Introduce PCI Express® Card-Edge Connectors for Surface Mount Termination

ETTERS, PA. (April 13, 2007) - FCI, a leading developer of connectors and interconnect systems, has expanded its PCI Express® card-edge connector range through the addition of vertical connectors designed for surface-mount (SMT) termination. Available connector sizes provide 36, 64, 98 or 164 contacts to support x1, x4, x8 or x16 high-speed, serial PCI Express lanes.

The SMT connector versions feature 0.1mm lead coplanarity and SMT retention clips at both connector ends to provide additional mechanical strength after soldering. Non-protrusive orientation posts are also available. Users can choose either tray or tape-on-reel packaging for compatibility with conventional SMT board assembly processes.

"In addition to addressing embedded or industrial applications where a surface-mount connector may eliminate the need for and cost of a secondary wave-solder process for attachment of through-hole components, the PCI Express connectors can also be used in applications such as a server riser card where it may advantageous to mount connectors or other components back-to-back on opposing sides of a printed circuit board," said Hunter Chen, FCI Product Manager. "Eliminating the through-hole connector leads and the need for PCB through-holes to accommodate those leads simplifies board layout and trace routing."

The PCI Express card-edge connectors are designed to accept a 1.58mm (0.062") thick add-in card. A molded polarization key on the connector and corresponding notch on the add-in card prevent improper insertion. Sequential mating for hot plug capability is accomplished by staggering the appropriate edge fingers by 1.0mm on the add-in card.

Typical pricing ranges from $0.02 to $0.04 per contact for 2,000-piece order quantities, depending on connector configuration and packaging. Samples are available for delivery with production lead-times from stock to 6 weeks.

FCI also offers PCI Express card edge connectors for through-hole solder, press-fit or straddle-mount termination with x1, x4, x8 or x16 PCI Express lanes and can provide 200-, 230- and 280-position connectors to support riser card applications.
